whats the point of buying expensive rims?

whats the point of buying expensive rims?

my cousin has recntly bought a set of work xd9 and he was giving me **** about putting rotas on my car. when the point of buying expensive rims is so that it will weigh less, but in this case, whats the point? is it just for the stickers dont know?

point of the thread why people hate on cheaper rims when its basically the same just with no stickers?

work xd9= 17x7.5 24lbs set of 4 $1200
rota d2=18x8 20lbs set of 4 $600
i can put ssr stickers and put it on my rims....
i just dont see what the point of spending $1200 on rims if i can spend less on lighter rims?

but dont get me wrong the rims look good on the car....

Better quality materials and build, but that is up to a certain point after that its just brand name and aesthetics.

with anything there is always the factor of you get what you pay for. I learned early on in life (im only 25 now) but when you buy cheap computer parts - you get a shitty computer that wont last near as long.

The same is mostly true for car parts and almost anything - if you go uber-cheap all the time it WILL come back to hurt you. For wheels all i can think of it a cheaper rim bending/warping/whatever much easier then a set of Volks.

You are buying a name when it boils down, but what you get with that name is superoir build qualitly and a (generally) some kind of warranty and tech support, etc. Not to mention, Volks, BBS', SSR's, etc...you are buying the name, but they have earned a reputation by doing something right- right? You don't hear of too many BBS' wrapping or breaking, but you hear a lot of diaster stories associated with EBay specials.
But that being said, your rims aren't knock-offs persay, so it just boils down to personal choice then. I love my 5Zigens- which isn't the best name out there but it certainly has a brand reputation for being a solid rim, and my set only cost about $700 with shipping plus tires.

Weight of the wheel itself is important. If you buy a lighter wheel you will have less Unspring Weight.... Now i'm sure you all know about unsprung weight... riiiiight?

Well my miata comes with Mazda 17X7 10-Spoke Wheels that weight 17# I'll sell them with the tires. The tires are Run-Flats, so their pretty pricey (220 a tire). 1,100 dollars for my wheels/tires.

Not always true, though. For instance, when I bought my motorcycle a number of years ago, I could have paid three times as much as I did and gotten a Big Name motorcycle that was actually of inferior quality. The price difference was purely about name and image. Moral of the story: you, the consumer, must do the research. Yes, usually "you get what you pay for", but not always.

it all comes down to preference. Me personally, I would never put rota's on my rx8, on my civic I would, but I wouldn't put rota's on my 8. I'd be too embarassed to say , yea, I got rota's. Some people like quality parts and brand names, others (like me) don't like cheap knock offs. Don't get me wrong, rota's look cool, and will get the job done, i might even get some for my crx, but I would never throw some on my 8. And please don't fake the funk and put real stickers on your rota's, that is seriosuly just wrong

i would never put stickers on my rims i was just saying, there really good knockoffs, my point of saying that is they look almost identical, but price there far from each other,agree i would also never put rims that cost more than the car (honda)...

Just an aside, his CE28N 17x7.5 were 24 pounds per wheel? That makes no sense to me as CE28Ns are one of the lightest wheels you can buy on the market today and those don't look like CE28Ns anyway. The wheels on that car are 9 spokes and CE28Ns are either 10 spokes or 8 spokes for the small diameters.

the only reason some (not all, but mostly all) worry about brand is because they are worried about what other people would say about them. same goes for wheels, clothes, jewelry, anything. if you like them, go for it, who cares what others think. Chances are in real life a complete stranger won't say a thing about your wheels, just the people you're trying to impress will comment.



there's more important things in life than the brand of shirt on your back.

ITs the *brand* that matters, Just like some people would go for Ferrari, some think that Hyundai can get the job done.

but for me, I would go for lighter, wheel only. Thats why I got Mazdaspeed. Its not cheapest, but its already lighter than my stock(which are already pretty light weight to being with).

Im happy. But would I go more extreme? maybe, not now tho.

well regular price on the d2's are $1150+shipping, not really cheap but i got it for $600, i dont knoe why people hate on rotas...

Expensive is relative. What costs a lot for you may not be that much for someone else. IMO $300 per wheel is not expensive.
