For optimum performance (meaning max hp) 91 octane is recommended. Anything above 87 is ok. You will lose a little performance with 87, but will not hurt the engine nor diminish gas mileage.

Let the purist rants begin, as per the umpteen other threads on octane.

As far as I remember in Europe - or Germany - the lowest you can buy is 91. They measure the Octane somehow different.

Europe 91 "regular" = USA 87
Europe 95 "super" ... 91
Europe 98 "super plus" .. 93

They even have 100 now.. which probably corresponds the the 95 sold in the USA.

I would be careful with which Octane you use. The way I always usnderstood it was the higher the octane, the SLOWER the burn of the fuel mixture. The lower the octane the FASTER the burn. If the fuel mixture burns too fast, damage to the engine can occur, and if the mixture burns too slow, you will waste gas, overload the catyalytic converter and actually hurt performance. And there are other issues as well including heat.

For a simplistic overview check out this explanation:

yeah Why there is different units????

I knew that the one use in Australia is RON... we have 98, 95 and 91 RON.

Add fuel additive even get over 102 RON

Sure it will be more responsive for the 8 as a high rev engine should benefit with more RON!
