At what mileage is your engine still running as good as new, or better?

I am curious about how many miles your RX-8 has been running as strong and reliably as the day it was new. I know... the 8 has just been added to Consumer Reports's list of "Recommended Cars" (which must be "average" in reliability or better), and Car and Driver rated their long-term, 40K+ RX-8 "average" in reliability and Road & Track rated long-term reliability "excellent", but I'm looking to see just how far a properly maintained Renesis can go.

Also, as most of you know, rotary engines improve as the miles accumulate, as Car and Driver noted in their 9/05 long-term road test:
"Racers say rotary engines get faster as they age, the engine's best lap always being the last one. The RX-8 didn't disprove the theory after 40,000 miles, cutting its drag sprints down to 5.9 seconds for 60mph and 14.6 seconds at 96mph through the quarter."

I thought it would be interesting to explore this further, so please note if your engine is performing as good as when new - or, like C&D's long-termer, even better.

Please note that Mazda elected to replace - rather than repair - a small percentage of early RX-8 engines (mostly from first-year-of-production '04s) after they failed a compression test, but for the vast majority of owners enjoying an essentially trouble-free engine, let's see how far you've gone - and if your engine runs as good as new, or better.

I guess with one for engine failure, why not how many miles is your original engine on is good enough.

This car just isn't old enough to tell. In 8-10 years we will have a better idea.

04 MT here with 75K. Cat replaced at 25K, no other issues. I have to admit that I'm a little nervous about the engine as I'm putting 25K per year on it lately.

I've got about 7K on my reman engine and it's running well still. Original engine starting failing somewhere in the 40K range, it started acting up before I got the car.

This thread fails because humans like bad news than good news. Hence you never read about someone recovering from cancer or a group of teenagers got together to help out a homeless neighbour. Instead you read and watch about depressing things. So this thread fails for lack of negativity!

Wow man, you've driven a lot of miles in the last week!

Perhaps next time check to see if a poll lists names before lying on one. Like I said before, it's pitiful (pathetic sad, etc. etc.) what some of the fanbois on this site will go through to try to dispell any notion that there is a problem with the Renesis or that the RX-8 might be unreliable. I voted just so you didn't feel so lonely...

I have my original RX-8 engine. Purchased in April 2004, the car was built in Dec 2003.

I have run 32,000 miles NA. 19,000 miles FI. That's 51,000 miles total for the math impaired.

I've gone through four detonations, including two at 11 psi. It has also had a giant ping.

MazdaManiac tested the compression and it's even all the way across both rotors. My engine is healthy and has good compression.

So no problems here, even though it's taken more than it's fair share of beatings. I expect to generate 320-340 whp next time I get on the dyno.

Perhaps you just misremembered your mileage I can see how easy it is to confuse less than 5k with 80-100k+

Maybe he was somehow applying dog years to his mileage?

Maybe he took the mileage off the wrong car...it happens. You have to pay special attention to what car you are in when you take the mileage down.
