Sorry to see that man.
I can't stand when people do anything hostile to me or anyone else, especially when you know that behavior is their "norm" and they are passing that on to a kid.
As far as the scratch, there is a thread here, I think it's called "paint chips for dummies" or something like it. Depending on how much time you have, you might want to try DIY first. You can always go for the repaint later if you don't like the results.
There's also a great website www.autopia.org that has an auto detailing instruction book you can download for free. There's an entire section dealing with chips and scratches. You can get some incredible results without repainting.

It is true - people really don't respect other's property. My last post in this thread (I'm not trying to hijack - I hope it's to the point) was in regards to my experience Friday night of asking a couple guys politely not to lean on my car.
Well, I had another gig last night, this time in the city, and at the suggestion of my friend, I took my Saturn, and it's good that I listened to her, because there were two chicks sitting on my freakin hood with their feet on the bumper. I asked very nicely if they could get off, and they were very apologetic. I purposely made it seem to them like it was no big deal because I didn't want to come back and see any intentional damage by them or their possible boyfriends. It really just dogs me that I have to go out of my way to not be firm with these people, but thank goodness I didn't take my RX-8.

A friend of mine owns and runs his own high end body shop. Last week alone he said they had a brand new Lexus come in keyed, it will require complete repainting except for the top. And he had a young kid come in with his new blue RX 8, same damn thing!
Makes me afraid to park it anywhere I can't sit and watch it.

Sorry to see this ***hole keyed your car. I am always worried about some jerk doing the same to mine. I came out of a business the other night and some jerk had spit a big one on my hood. Thank god for the wonderful wax job. 8 owners beware!! There are real jerks out there who want to hurt our lovely cars!

Yesterday I found some car parked in my reserved covered spot. As I had this thread in my mind I ended up being real polite in the note I left on his car. Hmm I am becoming paranoid/neurotic?

Did the scratch make it past the clear coat? I can't really tell from the picture but the picture doesn't look really bad. However, you can always try X-Scratch, it works really well for minor scratches, you can polish away majority of the scratches with it, would definately recomment it's use for minor scratches and imperfections.

I had someone key f** U on the rear quarter panel of my 2000 Camaro and it cost $600 to redo (had a few dings taken out in the process) the one thing I learned is that vandalism falls under the comprehensive part of your insurance and not the collision...both of mine had a $500 deductible..I have changed it to $200 for comprehensive and $1000 for collision.. comprehensive coverage is for acts of god, vandalism, and other things out of your control..collision is to cover the repair of your car if an accident is your fault. My premimum actually went down and if I would get keyed again it will only cost $200 The good part is anything covered under comp shouldn't cause your insurance rates go up.

Yes, unfortunately this a**hole dug in and part of the scratch is all the way through to the aluminum (I can see bare metal). I put some touch up paint just to cover it for the time being, but I still know it's there. Hopefully I can drop by the body shop tomorrow and they can tell me what can be done for how much.
What really sucks is that this happens after I just had to drop $3k for a new engine plus other things to be put in my wrangler.

People like that must not know what it feels like to spend 40Gs of your hard earned money on a vehicle

i don't let anyone lean on my car, friends or not. some jeans/shorts have metal studs on the back of them, and if they were to lean on my car with those things it'd scratch the paint.

Chances are he'll come back one day to buy things again. Keep an eye next time you go there and see if you could see what he is driving. Then, you can return the favor and then some. Just an idea.

I know they can match the paint. The spoiler on my 8 is not stock OEM. The salesmen told me it was early stock and they had changed it with the next import, litterally lied to me, but, the point here is the paint matched EXACTLY!
When I took my VR into get an estimate on the ding on the bumper from the carwash incident, he was worried about matching it and I asked him if the paint matched the spoiler and he said. "sure, isn't it stock?" I said absolutely not and someone in the area must have matched it. He still gave it a huge estimate though. Truth is, I think it was their shop who painted the spoiler but it was their other one accross town. :D
I have to go over there to get them to fix the bumper since they did such a good job painting the spoiler. I'm not paying over $300 for them to fix this small spot, either they do it for less or I'll find someone else.
A whole door panel is different. I wouldn't tell them you were using insurance, body shops tend to gouge insurance companies but if it is an individual, they usually give you a better price. I know you said you had a 1K deductable so I don't know if you are going throgh your insurance for this or not.
Did you get an estimate yet? Does Lou do their own work? Most dealerships up here send it out and have their favorite shops they send business to.

did the camera you get his plates? if so i'm sure you can run it by the dmv or local public records and find out who he is. then from there you may be able to find out more about the a-hole by giving a little present to an employee at the store. such as when he comes in etc............

I always park my car at the far end of the parking lot on campus...and it's always next to the same two people..and usually my ex parks on the other side of me...One day i get this text msg. while sitting in a class from a friend saying that some girl had just swung open her car door missing mine by about an inch. then taking her pack back out of her car and slamming it on my hood...
Needless to say i jumped right out of class and ran to the parking lot...by the time i had got there, my friend had already had it out with the girl and she moved her car away from mine...
I swear...what the hell do people think!? Who the hell are they to so much as even touch my car, yet alone put things on it...had i been there i would have been the biggest bitch to her, then taken my car else where to protect her...hehe. I hate people who have no respect for other peoples stuff....
Oh yea--and my hood was ok..no scratchs or anything..PHEW

Crichton, that blows. My friend was trying to buy a Toyota Matrix and the dealer called him in for something. Well he was in the deal some one keyed his car big time. They fixed it. Then he never did get the car...

tells me:"Who are you to park in 2 spots?"
I said: "I dont wont some-one to put a ding on my car doors"
He pulls his key out of his pocket puts it in front of his face and said: "Thats why people get POed and key cars"
I said: "Dont tell me how to park or where to park. Now get back to work befor I fire you."

I'm hopefully going to make it in at lunch time to Lou Fusz to get an estimate and will report back.
Unfortunately there were no cameras on the side of the parking lot where I parked (wish I would have know that beforehand), so there is no way to get any proof that who I suspect did it, did it.

If you really did come within two feet of hitting him and his kid, I can't say I feel super sympathetic. Lots of people drive like idiots in parking lots. I still wouldn't key someone's car over it, though.

What's wrong with 2 feet in a parking lot??? In pretty much any parking lot in America, when you are walking to/from your car in one of the parking "lanes", that seems about normal. Does this guy expect all traffic in the lot to halt when he is walking into the store?
The guy was obviously a jealous hater. For some reason pretty sports cars do that to people. I'd bet dozens of SUVs that cost more than your 8 have done the same thing and that guy never noticed. Similar things always happened to me when I had my FD - I could be a reckless maniac with my daily driver like and hardly ever get noticed, but completely legal and safe driving in the FD brought out the haters in droves. Go figure.
