It does not give any kind of boost. It makes life easier on the transmission.
You step on the clutch, shift into neutral, lift your foot off the clutch, step on it again, put the transmission into the next gear, then take your foot off the clutch. If you're shifting down, you step on the gas during the neutral foot-off part, to rev match.
Rather pointless on most cars to double clutch when upshifting - better to just granny shift - but it's beneficial on some heavy trucks and other big iron. Double clutching and rev matching downshifts is almost always beneficial.
If you google "double clutching" you should find lots of sites that describe it, and maybe some videos. If you're technical minded, see if your library has a copy of Taruffi's "The Technique of Motor Racing." That has a really excellent description.
Ignore anyone who tells you that synchromesh makes double clutching on downshifts irrelevant.

'granny shifting, not double clutching like you should'
listen to dominic toretto man, you GOTS to double clutch it.
jk. but it was funny when you asked if it gave you an extra boost
it's one of those things, I feel, where it's not much of a difference when upshifting as said before. but downshifting, like coming up to a stop or a light, it's nice to use especially if you're running any sound mods, ie intake, exhaust, pipes. sounds pretty as stated before.

I know that it will spin the intermediate shaft in the transmission up, but is that really all that necessary? Shifting the transmission into the lower gear (while the clutch pedal is in) causes that intermediate shaft to spin up to the speed the wheels need it to be at, does it not?

Seconding this question. When the hell would I have enough time to double clutch, and how is it much better than just regular downshift revmatching?

Unless of course you have a secret desire to become acquainted with an occassional wall or barrier because you missed your brake/ shift zone while you were busy futzing around in the footwell with a double clutch.

If you ever get a chance to drive a dog box transmission with straigh-cut gears, you'll know what double-clutching is
Again, as many have already stated, it's completely useless for upshifts on our modern sychromesh transmissions.
I think the first time I drove a racing transmission with no sychros I had thought that I broke the transmission with my mighty shifts lol. Then the guy next to me says, "Hey, that's not bad - most guys can't even get that sucker in gear."
