The myth is that the X stands for experimental or export, but actually it's just the Mazda naming convention and does mean sport, along with MX (Mazda sportscar) and CX (crossover sport maybe). The R does stand for rotary though.

 

not a myth actually. It does stand for Rotary Experimental. It's a carryover from the original designation. As explained to us by the former head of Mazda engineering at the Sevenstock X banquet when he was recounting the development and racing history of the rotary.
