What does the "RX" stand for?

Probably a stupid question (and I'm sure I'm gonna get some stupid answers), but what does the RX stand for? I'm assuming the R is for Rotary.

Anyone know?

Rotary Export.

Rotory Experiment.

These are the two answers you're going to get. You're also going to get just as many people telling you to search, since we've gone in circles with this topic for years.

Wrong wrong wrong... do some research...

R stands for rotary.
X stands for sport...

like the MX-5 for example... M stands for the piston motor and X stands for sports...
CX-7 for example.. C stands for crossover X stands for sport...

a fact from Mazda...

Correct on all counts! Mazda actually released this info in a press document, and on a seperate occasion, ruled out "Rotary Experiment."

Well I believe mazda actually stated that the X actually stood for experiment with the first rotaries they produced....however since then the X has come to mean sports in their sports segment\....so yes RX8 stands for Rotary Sport....but going back to basics it is Rotary experiment

Rotary Xanadu.

They were going to call it Rotary Xanadu Warrior (RXW), but the producers of 'Xanadu Warrior Princess' threatened to take legal action.

It's fact.

So you're saying Mazda's new naming convention actually goes back 36 years, but they only just started using it on the MX-5?

I can't believe this thread has gone this far and no one yelled search. I believe this is also in the FAQ.

We have go over this about every 6 months.

Oh, and they have used the X and number system with others, not just MX5: MX6, MX3, etc...
