I have the sand interior. but the A/C is not as strong as I wanted it to be.

Hell my father's 95 Quest GXE has Freezing cold A/C, and never had a problem, I feel ashame everytime my father said my Car's A/C sucks.

Since cold air sinks, the upper vent mode is really the right one to use for AC. Houses with upscale HVAC will have two vents in some rooms: a lower one for heat in the winter, and an upper one for AC in the summer.

My AC works well on fresh with the upper vent. We had some 100 degree days last summer. Didn't give that arctic blast that some people expect from air conditioning, but it cooled down reasonably quickly and maintained a comfortable temperature.

Thanks for the link and suggestion. But...I am a mechanic and engine builder...I am not stupid. I know how to set a/c controls to max. Even when this is done, the air gets cool then warm, cool then warm, as the compressor cycles on and off at perfect ~5 second intervals. This happens at idle or driving 55mph down the road.

the cycling on and off is normal. All rx-8s do it.
That MAY be normal operation for rx-8 cars, but it is NOT normal operation for car a/c systems in general. Ive owned and worked on hundreds of FC and FD rx-7s, a millenia, s-10, older Denali, current Denali, silverado, grand am, escort, the list goes on.

Every properly working (and cold) a/c system runs for 2-5 minutes and cuts off for 15-60 seconds then starts again. They only cut off because the core is getting too cold and there's no need to cool it further. They do not cycle RAPIDLY off and on without ever letting the core get cold, which is exactly what the rx-8 is doing.

If I can only figure out a way to keep the compressor running longer on the rx-8 without harming anything else, the a/c will be MUCH improved.

C&D's long term review mentioned that they had a dealership install an A/C amplifier that changed the duty cycle of the compressor and condensor fan on their 2004. They worded the upgrade as if it was something done for "people who complain" only. Is this something that was addressed for subsequent model years, or do you think that we might all benefit from this "complaining" and get that fix?

Thank you Rotary...I totally agree. Yes I know that an A/C system will cycle on and off. But not at 5-10 second intervals and NOT until the car has started to cool off. My A/C will start cycling almost as soon as I start driving. And this is while the car is still very hot inside. In the summer, I always have the mode set to "top vents only". And when I first get in the car, I roll down the windows for the first 1/4 mile or so to let out the really hot air. After that, with the a/c on recirculate, it really should start cooling the car down. But due to the cycling on/off, it takes forever to get the temps down. And heaven forbid I get stuck in traffic. It's totally hopeless when I'm not moving.

I'm the kind of person who does NOT like very cold air (hence the reason I live in Florida) and I normally hate to have the a/c blowing on me because I don't like the cold air blast. However, in this car, I have them all pointed at me and i'm still hot. This is why I consider this abnormal. It really should be able to get the temps below 90 degrees in less than 15-20 mins but that's not happening.

The air coming out of the vents is cold. So I can tell the compressor is working. But it keeps turning off! If it would just stay on for a while, I think it would cool things down.

Once again, constructive suggestions are welcome.
Many thanks in advance.

btw i had a new a/c amp installed as per the tsb and it still cycled on and off all the time, then they flashed my a/c unit and it stopped doing that.

after the flash it doesn't do the stupid cycling but it still wont cool down the car after a full day in the heat.

I have an '04 WB with the cloth interior and tinted windows. I live in Texas where we had 102-105 degree days this past summer. My A/C worked just fine on RECIRC (which came on automatically). Did it take 5-10 minutes to cool down? Heck yeah, it was HOT outside, but once it got cooled down, it stayed cool. I also use a front windshield reflective screen when I am parked. It sure seems like the quality of Mazda's A/C units is not too consistent. I am just glad I got one of the good ones!

did not call you stupid,, but the button push link stops the constant cycling.. you have to reset the amp after a bat disconnect... i thought it was just an 04 thing.

beers

fwiw my car is an 8 or 9 of 04 build so the a/c cant be programmed per that link.

my compressor cycles every 5 seconds regardless of vent selection or fresh/recirc selection. Sometimes at idle it will switch less often, say 15 seconds, but it switches more often while driving.

they all switch on and off repeatedly. That "programming" mode is stupid. All it does is automatically switch the AC to recirculate. You can do that by pushing the recirculate button yourself.

Sacramento County, Ca foothills 06 RX8 AC has been fine over the last week with unofficial temps in the mid 90's (RX8 ambient temp reading).

Only owned since November so it hasn't been subjected to 105 -106 week long temps we can get.

Does anyone have the performance test procedure for the 8? (every car is different, it will have the procedure and a chart to tell pressures at different temps). My 8 cycles and has had the revised a/c amplifier. I am a DCX tech, but my 8 tech (still under warranty) told me the control head wont do much and that the system is just weak (shitty was his exact words). If anyone has the procedure, send it to me and ill see if it passes Mazdas specs.

Lol I did, I was wondering why the compressor wouldn't be running effectively, since I haven't done anything.

But today it was back to going to recirc automatically, so no problem.
