What about RX8 vs 350z?

Oh crap! You were serious...
I have not heard of such a problem. Some of the 06's burn oil, bad. And some of the eariler tranny's had problems.
But at 3-4yrs, as long as he doesn't have over 60k miles on it, let Nissan...er.. Infinity, worry about it. (warranty)

No problem.
But, in stock trim, I wouldn't consider the 03-06 Z's drag strip ringers either. (The 07's+ seem a good bit stronger)
When it comes to racing, (again, in stock trim) I have always considered the Z "good" at everything and "great" at nothing. Well, it is a great value.
The RX-8 has a different set of trade offs than the Z. I came to this board after driving one on an autocross track. I fully understand why drivers like the RX-8. But other cars offer things that driving enthusiasts want too Z, S2K etc.
It's just a matter of finding what a particular driver wants most. (none of our cars are, or should, be for everyone)

true, thats why i said drag racing, or other forms of racing. the Z's do well on the autocross track. i met a guy at the last race. he was pretty cool. he had most of the N/A mods you could think of, and was rumored to have 350 hp. but even though he had all that power, and suspension upgrades, his best time was 67 seconds. while our stock 8's slowest time was 65. that wasnt his first track day either. it was about his 4th year of it, so hes no amateur. i just say all this, because more than 50% of the people who are on the Z forums, only care about the rush of acceleration, and not the other aquisites of driving.
Shortly after shifting to 2nd, I looked at my digital speedometer and it read "87" I knew it was too soon to be going that fast so I looked again. Sure enough my display was on the "outside temp" setting. So I proceeded to cycle through all of the options until.....SHIFT LIGHT!...Oh yea, I was in the middle of a drag race. I shifted and finished finding my desired display setting. I then shifted into fourth and got a decent 14.0xx run.
I discovered that, after the first 60ft, I didn't have a whole lot to do. Keep the car pointed where it should be and hit my shift points, but I was otherwise unoccupied.
While I'm on the autocross track, I'm pretty busy. (and don't have time to adjust my "trip computer".) Much more of a rush. IMHO
FWIW, I finally broke into the 13's (13.997) with street tires and no HP mods.

yup. i like watching top fuel drag races, just because they are so damn fast, but other than that, its a pointless sport just like Nascar. thats the thing i like about autocross, its not just focus for the burst of speed, but you have to focus the WHOLE time or your screwed.
btw, thats a funny story, thats like us seeing 120 on the speedo, only to realize that its kph

Its so funny to watch the flaming of a guy whos asking if he should buy an 8, I mean do you guys honestly expect everyone to just search the entire forum before asking a question that requires a one sentence response, "test drive them both". Jeez!

I recently test drove a NISMO 350Z and I must say that it is one sweet looking car, it has good power, good grip and decent steering feel. However after reading so much about the Z it just didn't impress me that much with the power delivery and courseness of the engine, if you have ever driven an FD you will be dissappointed by the feeling of acceleration in the Z. When compared to the RX-8 the Z certainly has a power advantage, but I prefer the the sound and smoothness of the rotary it just seems more engaging. All out grip of the Z is probably greater, however the steering feel especially in quick transitions is much better in the RX-8 and it doesn't seem to want to understeer as much as the Z. If you are interested in autocrossing RX-8's own BS with equal drivers the RX-8 will win unless it is a very high speed course, with street prepared cars it is likely the tables would turn.

Very simple, they both have strong and weak points.
The RX8 is a perefctly balanced handling car with room for 4. Its not in the same class as the 350Z other than being Japanese. Of course most buyers will compare between the two, I did as well. In my case rear seats made it possible to take my daughter along. The closest car I can think of (and once owned) is a Porsche 928 or the earlier 300ZX 4 seater. The Mazda is superior to the 928 and light years ahead of the timeless 300ZX.
As far as the 350Z, its a poor man's Corvette. If you want the real thing then hunt down a low mileage C4 for half the price and skip the huge depreciation on a Z (or an RX8). Then you'll still have enough coins left over for a great everyday cruiser for those not so sunny days.

I was looking at a 350z when I found the rx-8, I was test driving the z when I saw the yellow RX-8 sitting there, So I test drove them back to back in the same Night, I cant really say the differences in power were apparent, just because it was rush hour traffic, for both the cars, The difference was extremely noticable. The Z was a lot harder to drive (really hard to see out of the car, the clutch wasn't as forgiving as the rx-8, and the car just didn't stand out as much.
The Z is a real sports car, No Power Seats, 2 seats in there, a harder clutch, just noticable differences
The rx-8 just felt nicer, and stood out more which were important factors for me

I know this much that the Z is a great car with ugly tail lights however the same maybe said about the 8, and both cars can be modified.
Simply put the reason and the only reason I like the 8 more than the Z is how the RX8 is not YET a belly button car. I love the unique power plant and the design.
I travel a lot ... no seriously a lot and I've seen everything from Hummers to Bugs in rental lots, and recently (within the last year) a real growth in 350Z's. This to me means two things:
1) it's become a fleet car, meaning it's everywhere (yawn)
2) it's become a fleet car, because people like them (yawn)
Well dammit I'm not people and I don't like to have what everyone else has. .. .. ahh errr...
<scratch head> Maybe I'm not people <shudder>

and for me one of the most important thing i looked for is how it looked on the inside, cause that where you are most off the time...driving it lol
