What is this?

So there is a whirring sound when i cold start my engine. it lasts for about a minute then shuts off everytime i cold start. i finally located where it is coming from but i dont know what it is. if no one knows i will post pictures but it is on the passenger side next to where the sway bar anchors. it is a small cylinder shape about 1.5 inches in diameter and 1 or 2 inches tall. Could anyone tell me what this is and maybe what the issue is with it? Thanks

Adds air to the exhaust while the engine runs really rich, to quickly heat up the catalytic convertor.

The whole system uses more gas than a simple well tuned engine would, I'd be embarrassed if I had been involved with it's design......

the bearings in the pump are going out

you can either
leave it alone and let it die
take it out and put a blocking plate [RB]
or replace it [new is kind of expensive]
