Video camera mount?

Ok, been thinking of a way to mount my digi cam in the car for track days.

there are not two posts for a head rest, so you can't use one of those bars for mount.

I have been able to get a tripod in the back, and securing it with bungee cords may not be a problem (did this for a few other cars).

Wondering if anyone has any other ideas? Oh, and my digi-video cam does not have an AUX input, so a cone-cam is out of the question.

How big is the camera. Maybe bungee cord it inside the rotor accent in the seat. : shrug :

I actually jammed a tripod around the passenger seat (cheap jobbie I didnt mind bending to suit) and the bungie to hook it to the seat, door jamb and e-brake. Looks AWEFUL but it works.

I am however going to do a perm minicam for the front and back (to be later integrated into the carputer) since my camera has line inputs.

In case you guys didn't know there are suction mounts specifically made for in car camera mounting. I'm a cheapass so I bought one for $40, has a big suction cup, multi-angle movable arms with *****.

Only problem is it only let me mount the camera upside down if I wanted to stick it on the rear windshield, so I went to home depot and made a custom bracket to mount the camera upside right.

As I've been contiplating on getting myself an 8, I've also been thinking about this... I have the I/O port camera mount for my RX-7, but there is no place to put it in the 8 without some kind of cage...

Here are my thoughts besides using an actual roll cage...

I've seen camera/harness bars that go across mounted on the driver's and passenger's upper seat belt points... but that would not allow you to open the rear doors, unless it was easy to remove and just used for the track...

What about a rear tower bar, that has the option so that you can add some kind of V or U bar the comes out of the center pass through and comes up for a nice wide angle shot... the U or V extension can be easily mounted and removed from the tower bar with bolts or some kind of quick disconnects...

or...

As import enthusiasts, we want to showcase our racing, our cars, and the way we go about our lives. Most of us use digital cameras, and some of us use video recording. Now there is a new way to view your life, enter VüZ Racing Camera System.VüZ is not just another fancy gadget for your car, well ok it is…but VüZ is a way of life. WithVüZ, you are now able to share your ViZZion with others. The Concept One VüZ Racing Camera System is designed to be a sub-permanent part of your car. The kit includes 4 mini cameras, a shift **** or dash controller, extension cables, a microphone, RCA cable, power cable, and the brain of the whole system… The Mux Box.

Vivid Racing is a supporter of the VüZ ViZZion and has several different videos that can be downloaded on its website, www.vividracing.com. Vivid Racing has tested the VüZ Racing Camera System on the most well known prestigious race, Gumball 3000. We are now going to install the kit on 2 of our hottest project cars: 2003 Mitsubishi Evolution and 2004 Subaru WRX.

The first step in putting your camera system on is picking the best spots to get the best shots! Our first position was to mount the camera on the passenger A pillar. This shot would get a good angle of the driver during action. To install this camera, we removed the A pillar from the vehicle and ran the cable from the Mux Box under the passenger seat to under the door molding and up to the pillar. We then measured the diameter of the camera ring and drilled the pillar out to fit the camera in it. With a bit of glue it was secured.

Our next placement for the most intense shots was down on the front bumper. With the camera at a low angle, the ground appears to be moving faster then it is, giving the car a very fast panoramic view. On our red WRX we choose to mount it inside the hood scoop. The install was simple. Running the camera from our Mux Box under the seat, along the floorboard, through the firewall, and along the fender. We then ran the cable behind the headlight and mounted the camera with 2 screws up into the bumper.

After you have ripped past a car you just beat, catching him on camera is key! The rear mount camera we usually install externally. This time we mounted inside the car right at the rear window. The camera mounted comfortable with double sided tape securing it down on the plastic trim point backwards. The cable was very simple to run from the Mux Box and behind the rear seats up towards the rear window. On the red WRX we ran the camera cable into the trunk and down the drain plug and mounted I on the sway bar. It gives a great under angle and makes the ground look like it is moving at 100mph!

With 3 of the main cameras in place we have one left to do! Most of the time we keep the 4th camera universal. This way you can grab the camera and use it as a camcorder. Focus it on where ever you point it. We took this camera and ran the cable from the Mux Box to the center console. We tucked the cable under the console and velcroed the camera down for easy access.

The file process is connecting the Microphone and controller. The VüZ microphone works best on your dash or near the shifter. This way you pick up the engine and cockpit sound. We mounted our mic on the center console next to the emergency brake handle. This cable is run next to the universal camera and then plugged into the Mux Box. The controller is the most important part. This programmable unit selects which camera is being viewed. It has settings to rotate through the each camera at intervals, or cameras can be manually selected depending on which angle you want to see. This piece comes in the trademark VüZ Shift **** or flat Dash Mount.

All you need now is a video camera to record. An in dash DVD or LCD screen allows you to view what is going on while driving, but is not necessary. Now that your VüZ Racing Camera System is hooked up you can begin cutting your own video and sharing your ViZZion with others!

Here is that bar that goes across.. in an integra using the I/O port camera mount...

I"m not sure about using it as a harness... but for the camera at track days would be great...

I wanted a camera for track days too and since there is no harness bar available (and I doubt there will be because of the suicide doors) I installed one at the back of the car and on the front. Both lead to the glove box where I can view it or attach it to the Video-In port of a camcorder to record.

Alex,

Nice job and it looks like you may be able to save me a small fortune by finding an alternative to the Vuz setup!

Can you tell us a few more specifics about your setup like what make and model for the camera and monitor?

Are you using any type of video switcher or are you just manually plugging in the camera you want to see/use?

Last but not least, it would be cool to see a short video clip to get an idea of the picture quality.

I haven't found a good way to "hard mount" a camcorder in the RX8. As most of the hard mounts that I have seen are meant to be clamped on to a roll bar or the head rest.

You may want to take a look at the selection of RAM mounts at MobileCX and see if you can find anything that will work.
