Question Vibrating "tinging" sound when upshifting

I don't know if this is just my car but...

There is this funny sound that comes out of the engine compartment almost everytime that I upshift. Imagine putting two washers on a large screw and the washers are very close together. When you move the washer and screw, the washers will "ting" against each other and if done fast enough, it causes this "tinging" vibrating sound.

That is what it sounds like when I upshift. But it has nothing to do with the tranny but it seems as though when the engine is running at a certain "frequency" of vibration, that is when that sounds comes out.

Does anyone know what that might be? It doesn't seem to happen when it's sitting on idle. The car has to be moving, it seems like.

Does it happen even if u dont up shift, say while the engine is at certain rpms? cuz my car has a tinging sound between 7500-8500 rpms when im under hard acceleration. It sounds like what u described, however it doesnt have anything to do with shifting for me, just engine rpms... however i dont know what it is.

I've noticed it too. It happens only when I accelerate, between gears 1-3. It's a pretty faint sound but I have noticed it. Hopefully it's normal. Aside from some quirky, nearly inaudible, noises here and there (first gear noise, tranny rotating noise, etc.) I haven't had any problems with the car after 6000 miles. Any insight on this noise would be greatly appreciated!

Yes Blue_Chameleon,

I am experiencing the same ping. good description; best I could come up with is that it sounds like a very short burst of the rev warning buzzer.

I am almost certain that it started after my last sched service that included ECU flash, a/c amplifier, and console heat insulator. Can't help but wonder if the console heat insulation install isn't the culprit.

I'm almost tempted to test drive the newer 05s to see if it has the same sound.

OK. I actually tried to pay closer attention to the noise today (it's really not that loud). Under normal acceleration the noise started at ~5500 RPMs at 1st gear, but went away ~6000 RPMs. For 2nd and 3rd gear, the noise started at ~4500 RPMs and ended at ~5200 RPMs. After numerous stops, I found that this was pretty consistent. I don't hear the noise in 4th, 5th, or 6th gears...maybe it's not there at all or it's drowned out by the road noise.

IZoomZoomI, what's the sdais?

yea its most likely it... s-dais is sequential dynamic air induction system. Its a pretty complicated air induction where different "ports" open up at specific rpms... here's a way more informative thread about it https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...ghlight=s-dais

Wow, what a great thread. Another "noise" question answered, and another 8 owner comforted. Thanks IZoomZoomI. Maybe there should be a sticky for "Answers to Various RX-8 Noises" (i.e. transmission whirring that disappears when clutch is depressed, first gear clunk, valve pops, sdais pinging, etc.) I love this car, and every time I notice a quirky noise I think it's the end of the world...then I come here and there always seems to be an answer!

IZoomZoomI, what's the sdais?

This doesn't appear to be the same ping noise that I am hearing. I hear a single ping as I finish upshifting. How about you Blue_Chameleon, is this what you are experiencing?

Yeah, it doesn't sound like a 'pinging' sound. I doubt that it would be the S-DIAS thing...why on earth would you make something that creates such a horrible sound coming from the engine? That wouldn't make any sense.

Maybe if I strap a tape recorder under the hood or something and let you guys listen to it. The sound never showed up in the first 2000 miles and the suddenly, it started creeping up. If it was really that S-DIAS thing, then I would have heard it from day one on mile one.

It's more of a vibration sound more so than a pinging sound.

What you are hearing is probably the syncros working. I often mistake them for the rev. buzzer. Faint, increasing frequency metallic whine.

Ummm...hey, Paxman, no offense but I don't understand what you just said right there. If you can pop in a few needed punctuations, that would be cool.

I have the problem...but I determined there were 2 sounds
1.the noise described here at hi-revs
2.the coins vibrating in the little holder left of the steering wheel (drives me insane!)
