I agree, 30 seconds on google would have given you an answer. Your oil level is most likely low - when is the last time you added any? Take your car for a drive to warm up the engine to full operating temp. Stop the car, wait a couple of minutes then check your oil level. As your oil light is coming on, it is almost certainly in the LOW marking on the dip stick.

When is the last time you did an oil change? Call you dealership to order you a replacement owners manual.

Have you looked in the glove box?

Go to mazdausa.com and sign up in the "Owner" section. You can download a pdf there.

In the meantime...check your oil level. Add oil as necessary.

Ken

PS -

Take your car for a drive to warm up the engine to full operating temp.
Don't do that. Check it wherever you are - as long as it's on reasonably level ground. There is absolutely no reason to warm a car up to check oil level, and if it's really low driving it can do considerable damage.

My manual is in a little black fabric binder type thing that zips shut.

It has a mazda logo on it

This is not as bad as the owner who drove thousands of miles with the oil light on and seized the engine.

Just so we cover the bases here and provide actual info.

The oil light on the RX-8 is an Oil level sensor, the gauge is pressure. Whenever you see the oil light come on in ANY car, stop driving and check your oil level as soon as you can. Ideally, pull over to the side of the road, shut the engine off, wait 5 minutes and then check your oil level. If it's low, fill it up, and get an oil change as soon as possible. You've had who knows how few quarts of oil trying to do the work of 6, so it's going to be filthy.

The oil light on cars is not an "you need to get an oil change at some point soon" light. it is an "You are doing irreparable harm to your engine" light.

The gauge on the 8 is oil pressure. The light is oil level.

I'd still pull over ASAP and check the level if the light came on. If the gauge dropped, I'd shut it off and coast off the road.
