This has probably been discussed before but have they entertained the thought of adding an electric motor to the current setup like in hybrid vehicles?
Yep... Mazda is road testing with government vehicles (i believe) the duel-fuel switchable hydrogen and gasoline RX-8 in Japan. They got approval to run the limited test number on regular roads. How they get the hydrogen I don't remember... from water I think (on board the car or at re-fueling stations?) As hydrogen is highly combustable, but contains less engery than the complex chains that gasoline has... thus it reguires special tanks that hold little fuel and that little fuel can only take you about half as far as a comparable amount of gasoline. So the car is slower and has a shorter range on H2. OTOH, most of japan electricity is produced by nuclear power, so... this would cut down on pollution overal.
