Unbelievable...you've gotta be kidding me

So I pick up my 8 on thursday and receive much warm greetings from this board. What happens on Saturday? My roommate backs into the rear bumper with his Ram. I dunno whether to laugh or cry...mostly cry...but it could have been worse I suppose.

Man that sucks, hope your friend has insurance or a fat bank account, that will not be cheap to fix. Hope it gets resolved for you soon.

mazdaspeed only covers the bottom part of it. He'll need to get a replacement bumper still.

Let us know if you get it fixed or replaced, and the cost associated with it.

I've got a small almost unnoticable dent in mine. You can't really see it unless you look at the reflection. Still it bothers me since it's on a new car. So that explains my interest in the cost of a replacement bumper.

Looks like it only did damage to the bumper, which is nice. It's as easy as having them put on a new one, at least you know that you didn't mess up anything related to the drivetrain or frame, thats when you got real problems.

I'd think rather "new roommate!"

Anyway, that sucks- at least his insurance has to cover it.

sorry....

that sucks.

But good news is that the bumper is only around 250. That is unpainted OEM.

Paint depends on where you are. I had to replace mine a week after i had my 8.

I still have the bumper here if you want it. But it has 3 light notches in it. Maybe it won't bother you but it bothered me. Let me know if you want more details and pics.

It really could have been worse. Enjoy your 8!

$250? wow. Can you get it painted from the factory? The pricing seems a bit off though since any one piece of the app package will cost at least that much, and they're tiny bits of plastic.

Have you thought about trying to take off the rear bumper and push the dent out since the rear bumper is plastic? then you just have to pay for the paint.

Because the damage goes a little deeper, his truck actually tore the bumper near the light cluster and scratched the surface of the taillights too. The taillights hence are pushed in. Now I can't drive around without people laughing at me as if I backed it into a mailbox or something. Oh well...roommate's insurance is now responsible for my fat $1000 deductible

no it is unpainted as I said before. Still a pretty good price. I thought it was going to be a whole lot more when I needed to replace mine.

Why isn't his insurance paying for the whole thing. If he only pays for your deductible your carrier will still record it as an accident that they had to pay for and it will affect your rates. Have his carrier pay for the whole thing and it has no effect on your rates.

yes.. get a new setup dont settal for less.

His insurance pays for all of it.. your deductible only comes in if your at fault ! ..

make sure his Insurance co knows !!!! dont let him whine about his rates going up.. thats what happens when you crash your car ! ..

make him face the music.

Just stopped by the body shop...total damage comes to about $876.38. And yes, its completely out of his insurance's pocket, he actually doesn't need to even pay his own deductible. His rates should go up though. The body shop guy told me that the paint they use maybe would not match, because even though it is factory paint, the texture and shading may be different from the metal pieces compared to the plastic bumper. Has anyone heard of this? It better look good dammit.

An interesting side note, I've had a lot of RX-8 sympathy...two girls were admiring the 8 at the gas station and I showed them the damage, and they both went "I'm SO sorry!!!" and stroked the car as if it was a wounded puppy. Guess some good came out of this

Yah. Paint on plastic always mismatches paint on metal. I had a lexus in pearl white. Small paint job on bumper and upon close inspection, you can see a difference. But you have to pay close attention. If noone points it out, you wouldn't really see it. Pearl white is extreme case. Silver should be easier to match.
