A turbo timer is a lazy man's tool for turbo drivers who are too lazy to let their car idle for one-two minutes after running high boost, and feel the need to walk away and let car shut off on it's own. It serves no real purpose to prevent flooding, unless you get a top of line model. The high end models can be timed for car to run on it's own for whatever time you set it at (some up to ten minutes), so I suppose on very short trips with a cold engine, or a simple backing out of garage, this can allow you to go inside your home, let car run and shut off on it's own after your preset time to help prevent flooding. It's really a waste of money though to do it. This seems like quite a meaningless expensive stretch in preventing flooding, and the reality is if you take the steps to avoid it, you will not flood car. I would have top say remote starter would be a much better alternative, the problem is you can only put that on automatics, and not 6 speeds.

why cant you put it in the 6 speed?

it just means you have to leave your car in neutral always...

my friend has it in his SIR... works fine

yeah... turbo timers are only great on cars with really high boost cars such as RX-7... supra... 300zx..evo... sti.. etc.

In my parents c70 coupe turbo which i drive... it has low boost.. so letting it idle for 30 sec - 60 sec will do...

They are waste of money..
remote starter ($300) is more better... manual or auto... you can have it... put it in nuetral and e-brake ...

Some of them you can get modules to it. The car must be in N and some of them you have to flip a switch or push a button to have work.

Yeah. I tried taking my 88 starion in to have remote starter put in years back. Two places including Circuit City refused to install it, because the systems they sell do not work on manuals, and they said it's illegal for them to install it with the risk of someone starting car with it in gear. Also for that car he said since you do not have to put clutch in to start you cannot find it anywhere for that car. Of course the rx8 requires you press in clutch to start, so I guess that will work. I have yet to find a place that installs them, so to me it might as well not exist. It's sure not easy finding it, and definitely has to be pure hell installing it. If anyone has any link or knows of a place that actually installs remote starters on the rx8, please let me know, because I have yet to find one. Thanks!!

I think it's the viper security system, has a $150 module for remote start with MT.

The most important thing about a remote starter in a manual is that you always have to be aware of everything. I work in a shop where we will not install a remote starter in a manual for many many reasons. One of them was illustrated by a co-worker that has had a remote starter on his manual for years. You'd think that after years of owning one that you'd have figured everything out. Not true. One time we changed a tire for him. In order to do that we had to put the car into gear to lock the tire in place (front wheel drive). When we were done we just dropped the car off the jack, and handed him his keys. So while standing next to it, just out of habit, he remote started his car. Of course it jumped about 4 ft forward and almost hit another car in the install bay. So that's just one of the many reasons most places won't do that type of install.

I actually got interrupted during typing that response, so I didn't get to my point. One bad thing about reading forum stuff at work. Anyways... I had thought about getting some sort of turbo timer for my car to address the whole flooding thing. I have flooded my car once for sure, twice maybe, and just maybe three times. Every single time I have used the emergency procedure with perfect results. (hence why I'm not sure if I even flooded it 2 of the 3 times) That there is the reason why I thought better of getting the turbo timer. I've had great luck with my car. Once I turned it off cold because I just was 1/2 asleep and didn't want to fall asleep at the wheel. Once I stalled it. And once I didn't let it turn all the way over. Every single time I just held the pedal to the floor, cranked it, then it started right up. I've even started revving the motor to 3K and pulling the key when cold. So really it has become a non-issue for me ever since then. (the gas station is 20-30 seconds from my house) I don't personally think that a turbo timer is a bad idea, I just think it's not necessary.

An intelligent install of a remote start on a car with a manual transmission would use the tranny's neutral switch as an input. If the car isn't in neutral, the car won't start. Not hard.

Unfortunately not all cars have that switch, and even then not all of them are reliable. If this were an easy option every remote start installation company would just say, "sure, we can install in a manual." Every remote start unit has tha feature, it's used in every install for automatics. The problem is the car, not the unit. The only unit that I've seen used for manuals, that is specifically made for manuals, is no longer made. Unfortunately it was just about perfect. It had a shut-down sequence that had an option for a turbo timer that guaranteed that the car was in neutral, even without any sensor on the trans or shifter. If only it came back into production I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

But with a lack of a receipt, how would they know who to prosecute? <dripping with sarcasm>

Should I really bother to start commenting on this and the misinformation about turbo timers again? And yes it would work to prevent premature shutoffs of the car after cold start up, but doesn't help for stalling. And no one suggested it for any of the same reasons you would install a turbo timer on a turbo car. And turbo timers are not dangerous devices. Look up my old thread.

Just for reference I was talking about a remote starter. Not a turbo timer. I don't think anyone in this thread said that a turbo timer was dangerous.

A turbo timer basicallly a useless waste of money, and a remote starter on a manual transmission can be dangerous, but can definitely help. I will still see if this summer I can find a place that will install one in the Rx8. I might just give up looking before too long though.
