Tuner Info!!!!!

I asked quite a few places if you can rebuild the new RENSIS close to 350 (which is totaly possible according to the 13-bew experts) redo the exhaust manifold and turbo charge it (add 150/ agian according to the 13-bew). They are thinking that you'll actuly have about 500 HP on 91 gas at 14 PSI. Then when you add underdrive pulley, gel battery, CAI, exhaust, lighter tires/rims, alumium flywheel, short shifter, larger front mount intercooler, ported polished headers, ECU upgrade, MSD ignition.

Well you looking at 600 HP possible (remind you it's from people who know what they are talking about, but havent actuly put thier hands on the engine yet.)

Well thats just whats been said

Also announce veilside is "planning" on making a kit for the Rx8 it is in a accounts where the also said they are currently working on a 350z kit.

Also rumored that Motek will be accepting offers for the new Rensis to make a engine mangement system because the RENSIS is suspose to be a "one of a kind unique application"

You have to already install a CAI, exhaust, large FMIC, headers, ECU upgrade, MSD, and other sundry items to support the increase to 500 hp at 14 psi on pump gas. You will not be able to do that just by slapping a turbo on there, unless you just want to make a couple of 1/4 mile runs, and then be the first to rebuild a Renesis. Adding minor considerations like an underdrive pulley (what do you expect to gain by slowing down the water and oil pumps and the alternator? I just don't understand that.), flywheel, etc. is not going to gain you another 100 hp.

That's not to say that a properly designed, tested, and developed turbo system won't produce 500 hp on a reliable setup. For example, the FMII turbo kit for the Miata reliably takes the car from 110 rwhp to 220 rwhp or more on the stock engine. But don't forget, that's on a N/A engine that was already built for turbocharging. Hopefully, the Renesis will be similarly setup.

Driveshaft...

Ya know, we were talking about disintegrating parts in another forum, and it struck me. The RX8 will reportedly have a CF (or other composite) drive-shaft. I wonder how much torque it's going to be able to handle...

i wouldn't be surprised if its structural limits were very high... i wouldn't want to wager a guess though :p

uh, the 350Z's has one that's mostly PLASTIC, so i don't think an all CF one would be so bad :D

I've read that carbon fiber, if treated correctly, can be much stronger than steel.

The difficulty with carbon fiber is supposed to be in production. As I understand it, the process is similar to that of producing industrial magnesium. In both cases, the manufacturer has to press the materials under high pressure into its shape. On top of that a cryogenic treatment of extreme heat and freezing cycles must be done to allow all the microscopic cracks and stress related areas to settle.

Carbon fiber IS more strong than steel. The key to it is though not its strength, but its weight. The entire body, driveshaft, etc of the McLaren F1 is entirely made of carbon fiber. One of the many reasons it costs around a million bucks

When I had my '99 Z28 it came with an aluminum ds that weighed approximately 34 lbs if I remember correctly and there was a carbon one available that weighed 16 lbs and could handle a claimed 1200 hp compared to 800 or so the aluminum was rated for.

One of the mechanics that work on my '93 Rx7 (Rick's Rotary in Pleasanton, California), saw one of the pre-production RX-8s at a racing event. He says they plan to put together an after-market package for the Renesis, but not for awhile. He says there's a lot of plastic-like material around the engine and everything fits real tight. Sounds like any additional equipment put in the engine compartment will take some careful planning.

What is with the trend of all of these companies putting these plastic panels on top of the engines? I mean, you open the stinkin' hood, and there is another "layer" covering the actual engine.

I always thought that if I had a vehicle with that kind of garbage around it, those plastic panels will find themselves stored in a closet somewhere.

they could have all sorts of uses though... engine-bay air management, protection from water flooding... stuff like that. i don't think that they're there to be a detriment to the car's design... i'm backing all the engineers at the factory as brilliant guys again here...

I also would like to have the engine "exposed" as opposed to covered like a Mercedes. Tough to say if it's done just to make it look clean and maybe reduce the sound?

Air management? If anything, all of those panels in the engine bay will stunt air circulation around the engine. Water Flooding? When you put plastic panels in the engine bay that are basically up against the hood when it's closed, there is no water to protect the top of the engine from. 99% of them are for style alone, with occasional side effects like sound deadening and oil spill guards, which weren't the main reason for installing them.

Yeah, but when you're talking about marketing a car and it's styling, form does not always follow function, and the option isn't the engineers'.

Wasn't it said in some post that the engine cover actually reduced engine bay temps by a few degrees C?

I' m almost getting tired of reading threads here today. All day, it seemed as though new ideas were exploding into the forum. I start getting excited, and then I realize it's DARKMAZ again raising the dead. Maybe I'll have to take a break for a while and hope he finds a little satisfaction in the "now" instead of the "then."

Dark: You're using that search-thing again, huh?
