Ok, this spooked me. I'm sitting at a gas station about 1 this morning..Temps about 60 degrees. The car is warm so I left it running while I got gas. I started the pumps and had but a couple of gallons in and it tried to stall. The RPMS dropped way down, but then they went back up. Is there any possibility that the fuel temp was much cooler and it hitting the tank froze the fuel pump for a split second? I've never experienced a drop in rpms like this before.

Any thoughts?

Only way I can see that happening is you splashed enough bubbles around the pump and the fuel injectors treat bubbles just like gas, so no fuel for a split second.

....but I agree, a seriously bad life-decision to fuel up while running.

 

I hope you don't also smoke while pumping gas....because that you be bad for your health. Hopefully Darwin won't catch up to you too quickly.

 

I know a few people who fuel it while running, I usually try to get out and away :P

 

Keeping the car running while fueling up is a bad idea and illegal in many areas for a good reason. While liquid gas is going in the tank, explosive gas fumes are being forced out. Any spark could cause these fumes to ignite. A shorting or loose spark plug wire, the brushes on the alternator or many other sources could be the flash point. Please turn the car completely off when fueling. I will even if it is -20 F.
The reason for the stumble could be due to the engine running with the gas cap off. This could throw off the emissions system sensors and the PCM.

 

I would imagine that the gas tank is under pressure and if you open it, you lose that pressure which will throw the sensors off. That's what probably caused it to nearly stall like that.

 

See, now this is why I like it here...Thanks guys. Of course I know your not supposed to smoke at or near a gas pump but I didn't know something like an alternator spark or lose plug wire could spark an explosion. Lesson learned, and my mind eased.

lol, this has happened to me when I fueled up while letting the car run, I just figure it was because....well....I was fueling while it was running!

 

My dad, I don't think, ever turned the car off while refueling his 77 Camaro. Probably because 1/2 the time it wouldn't start up again.....

 

this is why im not allowed to pump my own gas in Oregon

 

Half the time, I dont turn it off bc I fuel up like 100 feet from my place and my car isnt warmed up yet, so I let it run while I throw 15 bucks in and grab my 44oz coffee

 

If you take the gas cap off while the motor is running, the PCM will register and evaporative leak and initiate a bunch of countermeasures that amount to a huge vacuum leak.
Mine will stall if I take the gas cap off when its hot.

Next time you fuel up while its running, be sure to wear some rayon and rub a balloon on your head while talking on the cell phone.

electrostatic ! lesson 2 ...do not go IN YOUR CAR when fueling ...you rub your cloth on your seat while sitting ....creates electrostatic ....! if u wanna go in , make sure u touch metal after coming out of the car and before going near the fuel door ....thats why they car designers make ppl open their fuel door instead of automatic pooping out all the way .....

also, do not remove the nozzle from your car if it should catch on fire.
