Transmission noise

Hi all,

Finally picked up my Rx8 yesterday. I love the car! I'm glad to report that I don't have the much dreaded gas mileage problem some of you have experienced. So far, the mileage is at an acceptable level. However, I do notice that there is loud bang noise occasionally when I shift into the first gear at a stop. Is this normal? Other than the noise, I don't feel anything wrong with the shfter. In fact, I think it's quite smooth.

I experience the same sound. (Sometimes loud, sometimes more quiet, sometimes not at all)

In a different thread, somebody said that it is the ABS performing a self-test, but at the same time they mentioned that it is done at 4-5 mph and not while standing. (They also mentioned that there a reference to it in the users manual – maybe so, but not in the Hungarian one)

Nevertheless, I have the impression that it is not coming from the tranny because I experience this particular sound while shifting.

In my car there is more than 20k miles, so the car is well broken in.

That sound is normal. Its the Neutral to first shift that makes a clunk noise. The ABS self test is when you start moving.

In my experience with my own 8, I find that you can get the bang if you move it with a lot of force or in a quick motion. On mine, I've been able to "ease" it into first by gently emphasizing the move to the left before pushing it forward into gear. This always results in silent engagement of 1st gear for me.
