I don't think anyone would want to buy a used higher mileage hybrid almost out of warranty. You have to consider large resale depreciation. I don't think the car will save any money it the long run.

Hybrids are like Apple: they're so trendy it's puke inducing. But like Macs/iPods/iPhones, they do offer some tangible benefits and whether those offset their disadvantages depends on one's needs.

Don't compare the Prius to any Apple product. Apple is "trendy" because people realize Apple makes the best products in its market segment. Hybrids are trendy because of Cameron Diaz and Al Gore. Big difference.
