Bought an 04' manual. 3 days later took it in due to service dept drastically overfilling oil. They changed the oil only to overfill it again. Brought it home and drained excess out. Got out 3/4 of a quart before it reached the correct level. 2 days later the CEL came on. Took it in. They never could really tell me what the prob was. I was given service records on it before buying only to realize that it wasn't a complete set of records till after the buy. Was able to acquire full set of records. Noticed that there had been a problem with overfilling the oil before and several oil related problems. When the service manager was questioned, he informed me that they INTENTIONALLY overfill the 8's since they use some oil. I was floored. I asked him if he had read the manual and the warning that is in there about overfilling. I also asked him if he had read the warranty book. It states that if the car isn't maintained a certain way it can void part of or the whole warranty. I wouldn't drive the car home. Told them they were the ones who had compromised the reliability of the car and that I wanted out of it. Fortunately, they worked with me, and now I have a CX-7. Unfortunately, I'm in something I never intended to buy. I never would have traded my Camry for the CX-7. And FYI- When we brought the brand new Cx-7 home, we checked the oil, and guess what.........it was overfull too. Maybe some day I'll get to have a new 8. Hope all you guys enjoy your 8's. I just can't stand the 'service' Mazda dealers offer, especially to rotary owners. Why doesn't Mazda do something about it? The Mazda regional reps are well aware of the situation on the dealer level but nothing ever seems to happen.

Every time I have had someone else change oil they overfill it. Every car I've ever had, every time. Usually it's because they put in enough whole quarts of oil to come at least to the top.

The dealer's oil changes on my 8 have been inconsistent. The invoice always says they put 5 quarts in, which is too much unless they tip the car when draining. It comes out 1/4 to 3/4 quart too full. Have not found oil in the air filter (yet) so it's probably OK.

Too bad about winding up with a car you didn't intend to buy. Ever see the first "National Lampoon Vacation" movie? When Clark goes to pick up the car he ordered, and leaves with the Truckster?

Arguably its ok if you overfill the oil by a little bit, and by that I mean 1/4 quart or so. But even then its something thats more of a possible problem with piston engines because if the oil is too high it can froth up and blow out seals due to the pressure. But on a rotary...what are the possible problems from severe overfilling?

ever heard the saying, "It's easier to add oil then take out" ? Well it doesn't apply to the 8!. Just drive around while redlining a lot and you'll be good.

You know, I have been looking at this thread now for about a half an hour while I was talking to someone on the phone and several things occured to me. First, this person did the right thing by getting rid of the car. Anyone who would be this obsessive and freaked about 3/4s of a quart overfill is too **** to own a wankel. In a recip. engine an overfill is a very bad thing, but in these things, who cares. It doesn't seem to hurt them. Second, the fuel mileage would drive this poor soul around the bend. He, she, it would be on the forum twice a week complaining about the mileage. Third, the engine had an undiagnosed CEL. Yumpin' yimminy, what if the poor dumb bastard got it diagnosed? It could have been a bad CAT or a worse a blown engine. How long would we have been listening to that? I hope that it enjoys the minivan.

You mean you were pissed because of the incomplete records and shody oil change, wanted to give the car back, and got talked/pressured/tricked into buying a brand new *totally different car that you never wanted* by the dealer?

Gees. Some will argue that you overreacted the first time, that an oil overfill is not THAT bad but I agree that not knowing the complete history of the car beforehand is bad and I too would have had a scare.

But NOW is the right time to react in a big way, realize that you've been pressured-talk into an exit deal that you absolutely didn't want. Give that CX-7 back!

So-called "exit deals" are always to the advantage of the dealer and never NEVER of the customer. I bet you end up paying for the CX-7 AND for a nice dealer profit on the "resale" of your 8 to them, all that wrapped up into your CX-7 payment.

first time they changed the oil in mine (at the dealership when purchasing, from a non specific mazda dealer), they filled it with synthetic. I asked if they did and they said that this is what they had heard it takes.. made em drain it and put in 5w20. SOBs trying to **** up my engine

okay guys. i understand why you might think i'm just a dumb chick who is overly obsessive. just so you know, i happen to be more knowledgable about cars than most "chicks". i am a former drag race driver who helped in building a few drag cars i my day. i learned alot in the garage i'll have you know. i also know it isn't too detrimental to overfill the rotary engine on occasion. i know it's a whole different animal and should be respected as such. i was completely prepared to care for such a car and had educated myself with as much history and literature as i could find. however, i had managed to contact the former owner of this particular 8 and was told by him that he had traded it in due to the fact that the warranty was about up. his statement was "it's not a car you want to have without a warranty." he also informed me that a dealership had actually overfilled it one time so severely that oil was coming out of the dipstick. i know i got the raw end of the deal at the dealership, but i won't have the suv forever. by the way, to whoever said it was a minivan, you don't know squat, it's an suv known as a crossover. and hey, at least it's got a turbo that responds as early as 2000rpm.
and just so some of you guys know, yeah i'm a woman, yeah i got spooked by the lack of knowledge AT THE SERVICE DEPT, not my own lack of knowledge........i have to drive my son around in this vehicle. these days it doesn't pay for a woman and child to be stranded on the side of the road. i'm not saying the 8's are junk, just that mine hadn't been cared for properly so as to insure that it was reliable. i hope someday to own another 8. just a new one with a warranty. sorry if some think i'm **** retentive and just like to gripe. i only wanted to inform people of the overfill issue at this dealer (even with piston engines) so that maybe someone will be mindful of their car and care enough to take the time to check and make sure their's is being taken care of so that it lasts them as long as possible. thanks for nothing guys and for underestimating a woman who knows what she's talking about but who respects men as the superior sex from a christian standpoint to the point that i will not elaborate on your obvious ignorance in many respects.

I wouldn't say you've "owned" an 8 because u test drove one for 3 days... but I had a CEL the same day I bought my car... It went away. Probably came on because the car was sitting on the lot for a while without being driven? It's never came back and i dont worry about it.

The previous owner of my car had more then 40 visits to the dealer under warranty... in 5k I haven't had any problems.

Cx7 is a nice mini van to kart the kids around to soccer practice, did u get the voice activated nav?

Enjoy the CX-7, a car you openly said you would not have wanted initially.
