I think you'll hate yourself if you go from the MT to the AT, the power difference sucks even if it's an 06 AT. Also the nature of the car just doesn't suit a slushbox, it's not a toyota camry. That being said, I bought my S2000 which my significant other drives and she didn't know how to drive stick at all when we picked it up. I took her to a big empty high school parking lot and she was cruising on her own by the end of the day after about 2 hours of practice.
The trick is just teaching the first 2-3 gears and after that it's easy. It's been about 6 months now and she's already been autocrossing the car with me for 3-4 months.

Are you saying the AT dont respond like the MT? I test drove the AT and the MT. My Girl could not get the feel of the stick. So I went with the AT. However I will be getting a MT real soon.
Can you also fill me in on what the "Real rx8 feels like"?

416to212, If you dont want to teach your Girl how to drive stick in traffic then sell your 8 to a privet party dont trade in its not worth it. I'm keeping my AT its almost payed off. I was planning on getting a MT. But after the probs I'm having with my 04 AT I'm second thoughts.

I pretty much learned on mine. I'm don't have the smoothest take-off some of the time but I don't usually have a problem getting the car going and not killing it anymore. The only thing I find a little annoying is that when I have the seat positioned just right for the clutch the gas pedal is too close. I also notice if my seat is too close depending on the shoes, I have a more difficult time with taking off smoothing. Shifting into other gears is never a problem. It's just first gear that gives me some issues.
I was also very proud of myself Saturday for stopping on a decent incline (going up the mail hill through Oregon City) and being able to get going without rolling back into the idiot that practically stopped in my trunk.
It just takes practice to get it down and then it's not much problem. I've just got to master centering myself in a parking space better.

I think Ike's right on target with both of these statements. While it is a personal choice which transmission you go with, it seems there are much better options if AT is your decision/obligation.

in response to 'all the problems people have had with their AT's'...ive never had a problem either (knock on wood). And I know everyone on here likes to bash those of us with AT's but most of us aren't hardcore car people, thus the AT. We like the car, the feel and me, I drive in traffic an hour both ways to and from work and its my only vehicle. So personally I'm glad the made an AT version.

I couldnt' enjoy the rx8 in AT, I had to trade it in for the 6spd. I'm not saying its wrong to buy the 8 in AT, but it just doesn't feel as right. I guess its just personal preferences and situations.
