So if you buy a silver you should move to Auckland and you'll be safe.

Maybe that's why it's a sports car like no other - the statistics are reversed.

Sorry about the car mate. As a fellow Silver 8 owner I was reading your thread and saying out loud "don't be silver, don't be silver" then I scrolled down and saw the picks of your wrecked silver 8 and it actually made me gasp out loud. Looks like the car held up really well in the wreck though. Definatley a good sign for saftey. Best of luck man hopefully you get a nice settlement and can pick up a new one. Good news is that you can probably get an 04 now for close to what the value of your car is. They are dirt cheap right now.

Matt, pray the body shop is right and the insurance company agrees that it's a total. Otherwise, if they do decide to repair it, you'll be without it for at least three or four months... and it will never be the car it was before the wreck.

Some things I was wondering about as I read your story:
  • Was the other driver licensed? Insured? What language did she speak?
  • Did the police come out and make a report? If not, it'll be your word against hers as to who was at fault... she will of course say that you were speeding, ran the light(if there was one), etc. You're lucky you have witnesses in your favor; do you have their names and phone numbers?
  • Do you have "gap insurance"? You realize that when her (or your, if she's uninsured) insurance company pays out on the totalled car, they will only pay what the car was worth at the time of the accident (i.e., used RX-8 with xxx miles), NOT what it would cost to replace the car with a new one just like it. The difference can be several thousands of dollars. Gap insurance covers that difference, but it's not an automatic thing... you have to buy it separately.
Good luck with all of this. I'm more and more impressed with the safety of the RX-8 every time I hear about RX-8s giving their lives to save their passengers. Thank you, Mazda!

I think those silver ones take on a Predator-type camoflage when they start moving. It's been proven that red and yellow are the two colors that most catch people's attention, so people in red and yellow cars stand a lower chance of not being noticed

Seems like people would see a red, yellow or blue rx8 sooner than a silver, grey or black, thus avoid hitting it. however, since the 8 is so damned sexy, people might catch a glimpse of a red, yellow, or blue and run straight into it, jaw dropped.

just a thought. :p

To answer your questions:
*The driver was licensed, I am not sure if she was insured, but our insurance will cover it even if she isnt, and she seemed hispanic

*The police did come out and make a report, talking to the drivers (the lady and me) and the three witnesses. The light was green on both sides, in fact when i got out of the car after the accident I checked just to make sure I didnt screw it up.
*I was just informed that I do not have gap insurance. I dont know what this will do in the future, but my parents will help and try to do their best to do the best thing.

Attached is the picture (a really crappy one ) of the accident

From my understanding, GAP coverage does not cover the difference from the current value of the veh before it was totalled, (ie : used w/so many miles), and the cost to replace it. What it DOES cover, is the difference that insurance pays out Vs. how much you still owe.

Ex : When my '03 Mitsu Eclipse was totalled in Feb '03, (only had the car since Sept of '02), I had 19k on it. Other than that, perfect shape and condition. Insurance only paid out what they figured the car to be worth, (17.5k). However, I still owed approx 24k on the note. So, GAP coverage came in and paid the balance. If note, I would've been left w/owing 6.5k. Agghh!!!!

That being said, if you don't have GAP & have a good relationship w/your agent, they should work w/you so that your not upside down at the end of the ordeal.

Either way, best of luck to you. Anxious to see what they say on Monday.

Sorry to hear about the loss. Those pics look ROUGH!! The last 2/3 of the car still looks prestine but that front half is just a mess!!! So sad.

Good to hear that you're considering another 8. You sure about another silver though? The rx8 gods have decreed them to be cursed. I guess if I were in your situation where I totaled my blue ... I would still go blue.

I have an update...GREAT NEWS!!!! Well, the insurance company took a look at the car on friday and they said that it is most likely a total, they just have to write up the report.

I talked to one of the workers there who looked at the car, and he said that around the back window, the car buckled, there was a little dent from it. This car amazes me everytime I think about!

I went to my local Mazda dealership, and might I say, my sales man that sold me the first car is great! I talked to him and he said that if the car is indeed totalled, that they will most likely pay off the lease to Mazda credit and give me the downpayment on a new car. Plus all the aftermarket stuff I did. Steve (the salesman) is going to get me a brand new '05 8 the same exact one I had ('04) for the same price and deal. I am so excited about this!! He said that I DO have gap insurance, and hearing that, I guess it just came with the car because we did not pay any extra So I am pretty excited about that.

More to come soon!

Just saw pics.. wow. I'm glad you're ok and this car is so safe. I think the Mazda site shows the shinka the best and they only come in the tan leather interior and that black cherry color with some other cosmetic goodies only available aftermarket in japan:

That's a total? Looks repairable. It's amazing what they can do ... unless it zinged the drivetrain. Not that you'd want it back, but ...

Glad you're OK.

Damn I'm glad I didn't get silver.

Yellow = high visibility - ain't likely to not see me coming ...

Well at least you put the other car out of its misery. It looked like it was way overdue for the crusher.

in the pics, you obviously can't see the buckling in the roof back by the back windown - that's an indication of SERIOUS damage - in the impact the firewall/cowl was pushed backwards - that's what causes that, and if your cowl is pushed back, it's damn hard to put the structure back together.

Sounds like a total ...

Most leases now-a-days include gap into the cost of the lease, or it is required to be carried through your insurance co. Typically it is incorporated into the lease costs. Unfortunately there are some leasing companies that are taking out GAP through a third-party insurer and then charging the leasee as if there were not a GAP coverage. Have your insurance co check to see if there is a third-party GAP policy taken out on your leased vehicle.
