That sucks man.

It's 50/50 to me, since there is no clear frame damage. If your airbags went off, that'll increase the likelihood it'll be writen off.

If you're not comfortable with a repair of that magnitude, then push for a write off..I would.

Thanks for the responses. I agree if frame damage then very bad news indeed. Totaled would be the best thing. At this point the passenger doors seem to open/close like normal. But driver’s doors will not open. The front right tire was pushed up so far into the wheel well that it ripped out the plastics. I really think my tires helped save my life. They took amazing damage and only one blew out. They bubbled and had chunks out of them but no blow outs. Hopefully, have it properly assessed on a lift by weeks end. By the way my window was down when this all happened. It sounded just like NASCAR wreck, with parts flying off, the metal tearing and then tire pop and skidding. Plus truckers tire was like 6 inches from my head. I did some wild 180’s after hitting the wall. I was doing everything possible from trying to keep from being sucked under the 18 wheels of death. Glad to be walking away from it. I was actually on my way to a road course track and had my helmet in the back seat. To bad I couldn’t have had it on at the time of the wreck. I have pretty good case of whiplash and things that go with that and the stress of dealing with the crap.

I agree with this. Have the claims adjuster at your insurance look at it, and they will decide whether it should be totaled or not.

answer is Total loss..... Pulled the plates from the girl today... very sad indeed.... I didn't keep the car for parts, just didn't want to deal with parting it out. Not getting another 8 and moving on to a c5 or c6 vette.

I actually am a claims adjuster (as a profession), and i couldn't agree more with both NoTears and Elara. There are time periods enforced by your state's insurance department where an insurance company must pay you, but in a personal auto claim typically it is 60 days (might be different for your state, but it is at least a month). That means the truckers insurance company doesn't have to give you crap until the end of that period, regardless if it is immediately known that he is at fault.

The good thing about a total if you're going through your insurance company: NO DEDUCTIBLE. They pay you the full amount right off the back, and then the claim goes in subrogation where the insurance company goes after the truckers insurance. If you haven't done so already, definitely go through your own insurance...........they will get the truckers insurance to pay them back much quicker than you can.

Oh, and how much did they give you for your 8 if it's been settled? Are they including your aftermarket parts?

I would really love to tell you right now, take it to the shop you know, then pwn the hell out of your insurance, tell them your exhaust was damaged and change the exhaust, change the rims, suspensions, and add a body kit, NOWS YOUR CHANCE!!!!

Actually, the frame is bent, and estimate was 10000 plus and average shop time for RX-8 is 30 plus days for parts as they have to come from dealer. Most of the under body plastics in front were all done, rear quarter panels had stress fractures on welds ect. Front suspension would have to be all replaced as they are bent. Of course doors, paint and there was plastic parts in the interior that popped off, which also indicated more frame/structural damages.

I would have bought the salvaged car and used those parts on a new 8 but as I am buying a vette, I do not want to take the time to part it out or need the parts. If the car was fixed it would have never been the same and usually transmission, ect will have issues on the long term due to the heavy impact to the drive train. So I'm glad not that I'm not getting it back to drive and wonder when things will start going wrong. I negotiated a very fair price and refund for my parts. So I will have no trouble getting in a vette with less than 10000 miles.

In insurance terms, the expression "Total Loss" simply means the cost of repair + projected supplements + projected diminished resale value + projected Rental Reimbursement expense exceeds the cost of buying the damaged vehicle at its pre-accident value minus the projected proceeds of selling the damaged
