BTW, 89 octane does give not only reduced performance, but lower gas mileage as well. I got about 16 MPG with city driving only.

Just filled up with 89, and gave it a hard run today - I see no degradation in performance - in fact, it felt quicker to me. Granted, it's just a butt dyno, and my butt has no cal sticker on it... but that was my impression.

Rotaries have always liked good gas.
Do yourself a favor and DO NOT dick around with anything less than recommended octane levels - especially if you are going to run the car hard.

I am sure 91 octane (or rather 93 around here) might probably give better emissions, but you can't get much better than that.

One question,
how much does it cost gas in USA? because it's said that in USA is very very cheap.
Thanks

Ahh, memphis has emission tests. I forgot that this is mainly based on population. In my area, we don't even have basic safety inspections. And believe me- we need them.
Ok, emissions.. You do realise that U.S. vehicles must pass emissions for 100k miles, right? I think that is why your new car is so 'clean', but wait and see how it tests at 50k miles and 100k miles. Anywho, this is the same problem the Miata owners were faced with- all Miatas were tuned to meet Cali emissions which dropped the hp. Were they able to regain the lost hp with ecu tweaks?

Should have used premium fuel in my '87 TII for the past 17 years, instead of regular.

On a related note, anything made after 95 has an 8yr/80k mile emission warranty on certian parts (cat, ECU, etc).

Not 100k miles of driving by the owner.

I believe 100,000 actually used to be the old standard for "full useful life". Check out the latest regs and the new Federal Tier II standards require the testing after 50,000 and 120,000 miles.
I posted some of this stuff and the current worldwide standards in:

All I know is my MPG is getting better with the mileage (currently at about 2700 miles). Each fill up gets a little better.
