Tinted windows or not? Help...

Hi All,

What do you think? Should I tint my windows or not.

Should I tint my windows at the dealers or else where?

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...chmentid=96344

tajabaho1 04-15-2007 09:29 PM

tint elsewhere, and if ur gonna tint, pls tint all windows, not just the windows you don't need, and it helps inside the car, +more privacy

NgoRX8 04-15-2007 09:30 PM

every rx-8 should be tinted. :)

i do not suggest going to the dealer (don't even know if they do it) because they will rape you.

search any recommended local tint ships

Leesha 04-15-2007 09:33 PM

I was quoted $500 from the dealer. And I haven't picked my car up yet. They told me I am the 1st to get the Performance Pkg. and will pick my car up at the end of April. This is why I have to come to a decision.

Leesha 04-15-2007 09:34 PM

I am in Canada and we have tinting laws...our windows cannot be too dark....

This is why back windows are dark and the front are light.

tajabaho1 04-15-2007 09:38 PM

hmmm.....ahem.............say.....what?

anthony20888 04-15-2007 09:44 PM

Everyone should tint there windows. Their are laws in the U.S. about tinting but who cares, it makes the car look 100% better. You should tint you windows because: keeps the car cool in the summer, car looks better, and of course you can look at hott chicks without them seeing you.

thats my take on it

Mazurfer 04-15-2007 09:51 PM

Leesha,

I know the prices might be different in Canada, but let me give you an example.
I got the darkest allowable in Florida at 15% in the rears and 30% in the front by a company called Sunstoppers which used the FormulaOne Performance Automotive Film(Pinnacle Ceramic Series) with Lifetime Warranty for $189.00
Make sure they use ceramic in the back and not metal as your antenna is in the rear window and you don't want metal tint back there or you will ruin your reception. $500.00 is way too much! IMO

NoTears316 04-15-2007 09:59 PM

Tint is good. You should probably go to a specialty shop instead of the dealership.

coastie08 04-15-2007 09:59 PM

Definitely tint (even if you can't go very dark, the heat & UV reflective properties will make your interior much cooler and will protect the interior). I went with 35% all around ceramic formula1 tint and I love it (cost $245).

llzjayarzll 04-15-2007 10:07 PM

what? tint laws? lol!! who listens to that these days =/

tajabaho1 04-15-2007 10:12 PM

I use carbon 50% blue tint in CA and not even the cops that pull me over cars (all around the car, 7" in front)

Mazurfer 04-15-2007 10:16 PM

You 'll care when a cop either starts peeling it off right there, or hands you a good size ticket. I actually can't see a cop peeling it off, but there was a thread on here where somebody in Missouri had a cop do that! Yikes!

tajabaho1 04-15-2007 10:18 PM

how does he do that!! @.@

CarAndDriver 04-15-2007 11:33 PM

Don't go to the dealer. Look around for a reputable shop to do it. Find out what the tint laws are and figure out how dark you want to risk it.

nycgps 04-16-2007 12:01 AM

My friend just got a Ticket 3 days ago, when he parked his WRX near the Jabco Javits Center for the NY Auto Show.

Cops in New york mostly dont CARED about Tinted windows, unless you're too *dark* like 5% and the cops are in *bad* mood. I see all these Explorers and Escade have 5% windows, cops dont give a shit.

I guess my friend was unlucky, he said the whole street's cars got a ticket, all for tinted windows, so I guess cops were being a dick that day.

You guys can check your state laws from this site
http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tint/

Sometimes I dont understand, Lets take NYC for example, if they dont allow tint at all shouldnt they disallow the sales of windows tinting products? I mean I see all these *tint your windows for $199* ads everywhere. I gotts say that I think more than 1/2 of NYC's cars were tinted. What kind of stupid law is that? and I think California is the most pathetic state, cuz all out of state cars when they enter CA they are required to follow CA's tinted law.

most of the time in this area its fix it tickets. unless you got a state trooper on your ass. and for some reason there only on the southern state and meadowbrrok around here!

N10S 04-16-2007 12:06 AM

I just got my windows tinted recently at a specialty shop in New Mexico, and the best quality tint cost me $149.95 installed. Most specailty shops will have details of whats legal and whats not, and my car has the 35% front and 20% back treatment. Another point of concern is that I have heard of horror stories where the tint shop got the door panels and interior dirty during the tint install process, so setting expectations with the person thats actually going to do the tinting helps a bit.

Thanks for the info I will make sure and look into the ceramic for the back.

About the Price...Everything in Canada is double the States. Maybe I will come to Florida and do it there. :)

I need a medium tint not to dark because I can't see too well at night...And I don't want to back up into a pole.

it will actually look darker from the outside than the inside. as said before, a reputable shop will know the laws for your area. there are also some tints that look darker than others for the same percentage so have them show you some demos. price will be more in canadia just based on the exchange rate so keep that in mind plus the reputation of the business and the tint films they use will also determine final price. how dark you go shouldn't matter though (20% vs. 35% tint) for price since it's just the film and they're not using more to make it darker.

and the reason that there are laws for how dark the tint can be is so that a cop coming up to your window after pulling you over can see into the car. if they don't know how many people are in the car or what they have they are at a disadvantage.

tajabaho1 04-16-2007 08:22 AM

get colored tints, they look awesome on rx-8s
but I don't know how available they are

I don't know about that. I got all my windows tinted (except the front one) for about $250, here in Calgary.

Leesha 04-16-2007 08:33 AM

I will have to research prices then...

What color tints would you put on a Red RX8

New Yorker 04-16-2007 09:46 AM

I hate tinted windows. They reduce visibility, they make the too-dark black interior of the 8 even darker plus, to me, they say either "I'm 17", "I'm a self-important Donald Trump wanna-be", or "I wish I knew Tony Soprano". Of course, maybe you like those things—many do.

i wouldn't. i'd stick to the black or variation of. i wouldn't go with the browns and certainly wouldn't choose another color. personally i think colored tints (sans brown) look cheap and belong on a civic.

I dont know about this website, I know they have New Yorks laws all wrong. Its legal to tint here, and that site says we have strict laws that allow no tint.

Rems31 04-16-2007 10:15 AM

Search!!!

Shinka-Dono 04-16-2007 10:24 AM

If you get tint, get it at a reputable shop (not dealer). If you drive a great deal at night keep in mind visibility will be reduced. Finally, never drive your new 8 in a lava flow.

imput1234 04-16-2007 10:25 AM

I've been thinking of wheather I should tint my windows or not now too.
But I'm gonna tint em
so TINT EM!!!
lol

Oh well it that case sorry. Your post was put up 3 mins after mine, and I figured you thought I was asking for tint laws.

Rems31 04-16-2007 10:37 AM

Well I was reading the 2 pages of this thread and not one person told the OP to search (I couldn't believe it!!) So someone had to do it.

Leesha 04-16-2007 11:50 AM

Search is good but not enough info for me.

I like to hear everyone's opinion and I especially like to hear about things like...getting ceramic ...

"Make sure they use ceramic in the back and not metal as your antenna is in the rear window and you don't want metal tint back"

djkrazy 04-16-2007 11:58 AM

i have the same question about that ... i think that 8's tinted are tight but the problem that i am scared are that i am magnet of cops pulling me over so i question tinting my windows cause i dont want the cops another reason to pull me over

CTrx8 04-16-2007 12:01 PM

then get the legal tint for your state. i believe most have a reasonable tint for sides (either 20% or 35%) and usually no limits for the back. this is by no means a blanket statement that you should use as you should research your state but stay within the guidelines if you're worried about being pulled over.

I don't agree with this. I have 100% metallic tint all around (pretty pricey package for $450, comes with a lifetime warranty w/ free replacement), with 20% in the rears and 35% on the sides. My antenna works just as fine as it did without tint. For me this configuration is ideal because I can still see fine at night, it doesn't seem to bother cops (I've been pulled over twice for speeding but they did not mention anything about tint) and it still looks great.

My seats are not black :P

Shinka baby !

So it doesnt look that dark from the outside. but its illegal anyway :(

llzjayarzll 04-16-2007 12:19 PM

someone check out the mercedes dealers. they got pretty clear colored tints on their cars stock! like the light light blue and light light green. anyone see this?

Coop '04 04-16-2007 12:23 PM

I don't agree either, if the antenna is in the glass and the tint is on the inside, it is not blocking the antenna from outside access, the antenna is wired to the radio so it doesn't matter what happens inside the car. If your tint is installed outside your tinter is an idiot :nono: :rollingla

dmc27 04-16-2007 12:44 PM

OP - anything that can be done elsewhere, should be. The only time you should take your 8 back to the dealer is when there is some work to be done that will be covered by warranty. Anything done at the dealership is going to cost you more, and the quality may or may not be better than a "specialty" shop. (chances are the quality will be better at the specialty shop.)

It is pretty f8cked up. Especially considering that in RI no tint is legal. No tint on any window. Yet you can walk onto any dealer lot and buy a vehicle w/tint on the back windows, if not all of them. :dunno:

Funny, I thought I got mine done b/c it looks sexy esp. on the BB, provides shade and protection to my interior and cut out the glaring headlights behind me at night. Since I'm not 17, and Tony Soprano is a fictional character, I guess that makes me a self-important Donald Trump wanna-be. I learn something new everyday. :Freak_ani

Actually, I have the Shinka, too. But I figure most have the dark interior.

laythor 04-16-2007 03:21 PM

Outside of body mods, tinting is the biggest change you can make to the look of your 8. Without tint your eyes gets drawn into the windows, with tint your eye follows the line of the car.

You don't need very dark tint to get the effect (unless you want dark tint, then more power to ya)

When you settle on a place for your tint, ask to see examples on cars. Most good tint shops will have tint on three or four cars in their parking lot (customers and employees). You'll get a better idea of how dark their tint will look then just staring at a 10 x 10 piece of film. Look at the cars they are working on. Are they high end or just beat up ricers? The better the car, the better the tint.

Congrats on your new 8! :ylsuper:

Leesha 04-16-2007 03:23 PM

Thanks...don't have it yet...soon :)

I can't see how tinted windows wouldn't negatively affect visibility, particularly as it gets dark. For me, anything that makes it harder to see out the car—even a tiny bit—makes driving a little less safe. It's the equivalent of increasing your reaction time. And I don't have a problem with glaring headlights—my 8 has the Auto Dimming Mirror, which does a great job. But hey, if you like tinted windows, good for you.

dmc27 04-16-2007 03:41 PM

^lol. Yeah, the driving experience is made much more exciting if you remove one of the senses from the equation. hearing, sight, some people drive "no hands" style . . .

It def. affects night vision behind you, but really only while backing up. Otherwise, the vision on the road is fine thanks to headlights +/- road lighting. Personally, lights are always too bright for my eyes. I need sunglasses even when it's not that bright, and headlights at night have always sucked. So the choice was easy.

Def. agree w/laythor about the line of the car. That was a better explanation of my "it makes the 8 more sexy"

i'm actually just researching this myself and haven't taken the plunge yet so take what i say with a grain of salt - it could just be the good old dog and pony show that the auto tint places are giving me. however, it is supposed to reduce glare both day and night so i would hope that it would be a good thing even at night.

my big thing, though, is that i don't like the auto-dimming feature and turn it off when i get in because i like to have my senses untouched. so i too worry that it could be that they're feeding me what i need to hear but i may not enjoy it once i have the tint on. i have never gone with aftermarket tint before because i had seen so many bad tints in past lives but ran into this guy with a lexus at the wheel shop and his looked great. he highly recommended this shop and i checked out his shop and have been tossing it back and forth since.

Come on down! :) Sunny and warm and beach is great!
Still think $500.00 at dealer is way expensive, see person in Calgary got $250.00
Yes, 15% in the rear is dark, but it's not really all that bad. Think I have a pic around here somewhere of before and after, I'll try to post it here tomorrow or send it to you via PM so you can get a better look.

Good point............I told them that if the f'd up the interior, then I would give them my cleaning bill..........and I'm expensive!
