ticket in the mail???
so today i went on a nice long road trip down to seaside heights which is about 1hr 1/2 away from me and i was going down the garden state parkway with my rx8 and my friend had his g35 and we were speeding, going around 70-80mph on the open road when all of a sudden a chevy tahoe pulls next to me and the guy inside flashes his badge (guessing he's an off duty cop) and i slow down and he rolls down his window and says that im going to get a ticket in the mail.. now im wondering if he really could take down my plates and do that or is he jus trying to get me to slow down? any inputt????

UNLESS they actually film your *** and paced you for a while, but even so its easy to fight these tickets off. since you can have a lot of BS to fight it off, say his tire pressure wasnt right, or yours wasnt right, your tire size is off so speedo is off, etc.
Anyway, Dont panic, just wait. and next time, dont even think of speeding in Jersey, its crazy over there, last time I got a ticket for doing 70 in a 50 zone, I know I speeded, but the point is that, alot of NJ highways are so long and empty, they set it to 50 to get people to speed so they can fine your ***(money)
I mean I can drive faster than 70 in the City, greedy government.

Cops indeed can give tickets while off duty. However they need to be in a marked police car if doing so. I would not worry about it.... sounds like one of those big headed cops that give cops such a bad name.

If they do def take it to court it wont hold up unless like nycgps said they have you on camera they dont need a radar to clock you they can time it out thereselves and im guessing that what he did but but if he is not on duty then the only thing he can do is call it in and let another officer who is on duty take it a cop pulled me over and said that he seen me speeding through town the other day when he was off duty but couldnt do anything cause he was off duty and he said he couldnt do anything cause he was off but he just told me to slow down so i think the same would take place for you

Did he have any type of emergency lights and sirens on that SUV?
If he did not, by not having sirens and lights (red/blue) and being off duty, and travelling down at 70-80 same as you did (not to mention even faster when he was trying to catch you)... isn't HE also breaking the traffic law???
Just because he is an police officer, off duty at the time, does it mean he is still exempt from traffic laws??
I think he's just trying to scare you so you would slow down.

I agree, cops can indeed give tickets while off duty, but I think he was just trying to get you to slow down. If he was really being a big headed cop, he would have followed you and used his radio to call in marked cars to bust you (this has happened to me on the motorcycle). Sounds like he was just slowing you down and possibly saving you from an actual ticket some where up the road.

I second the above poster. Here in Ohio unmarked police cars do NOT give tickets. They have this in the news every now and then. Not sure about NJ.
Take care,
Brian
P.S. Red light cameras here, again Ohio, are mailed to you. However they carry no points as it is an "administrative" ticket. At least I smiled for the camera .

Our State Police now have a number of unmarked black Mustangs, so 'marked' cars are not a requirement here. And concur, they can also ticket when off duty.
But I too wouldn't worry about it. Easy to fight that one in court, and I do recommend going to court if by long shot chance you do receive a ticket.

Der Polezei Have yuo now!
I don't know where all of you guys live that they can't give tickets by mail but the cops here have started using traffic light cameras, speed cameras and "Speed vans". All fo the above are equipped with radar/laser speed detectors and cameras, the traffic light and local speed cameras are mounted in fixed positions that are advertised, the vans are dropped off in concealed areas all around town and move from day to day, if they get you speeding you get a ticket in the mail and fighting them is next to impossible, "the robots never lie".
I don't understand the guy flaggin you down for the "I Got ya!" but I wouldn't put it past an ocifer just looking to wheel-barrow his ***** around town. Then again, it may have just been to get you to slow down in his neighborhood and there will be no ticket. I hope it's the latter.

He's as bad as Can
Where were you on the GSP? They lowered the speed limit to 55 from MP 100 - 80. They are also using planes and unmarked cars alot more. Could you have went through an EZ-pass without a tag?
