Thinking about gettin one

Hey everyone, I know this is my first post, but i'm thinking about purchaseing this rx8 http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/n...616646622.html

I am new to the rx8 world and would like to get some pointers/ insight... I drove this car the other day and everything felt real smooth. Then i started researching and came across recalls, worse mpg than listed for the car etc.

If anyone can give me some pointers and advice, thank you..

ALSO... Can i hook up an amp to the stock rx8 cd player? or do i have to get an aftermarket one?

Just ask if owner has performed any recalls, and how often he did oil changes and adds oil. Seems like its a good price for the mileage it has, about the worse mpg thing...this car is a thirsty one so don't expect it to be like amazing mileage. It varies due to how well its taken care of, I would ask the owner what they averaged and see if you still want it. Its recommended you run on premium also so factor that with your purchase. Best of luck because I'm looking for one and thats a great deal, its just like any other car when your shopping....make sure its had the maintenance done and following recalls.

04 with 44k miles for $17k is too much. That car is probably worth closer to $15k or $15.5 if you're really in love with it. The person in the ad is going off blue book which is a terrible indication of value, and the mods don't add any value either. Look at what comparable 8s are going for in your area and offer that.

tell him 16,500 out the door. with all those mods you would be saving a good chunk out of your pocket. ask anyone around here, this addiction gets pricey.

W/ that pully kit, what does that do? I'm kinda affraid that the transmission mighta blown or somethin, thats why he has the after market on there. Like i said, the car drove real smooth. I'm goin to look at a z that is like 2 grand more than the rx8, so we'll see what happens.. Thanks for the input so far gents

Most would say that modded cars are worth less than stock cars. Depends on the mods, but if you tried to take that to a dealership they'd give you less. It's up the the guy buying it though I suppose, if you like the mods maybe it's worth more to you.

I'd say that's too much. 16k is what I would aim for, but 16.5 would be great if you can lower him down there. I'd keep looking around your area, I'm sure you can find one for a better value.

Theyre lighter pulleys than the stock pulleys which makes your car rev faster and gives you like 4-8 extra horsepower. Heres what I recommend since your nervous, ask this guy to provide you with a warranty sheet. If he goes into his dealer with his vin and asks for a sheet displaying all the warranty work done ( I worked at a Mazda dealership), they can give it to him (mine is 3 pages long, I wish I was kidding) and that will kinda let you know what youre getting into and if it was a problem child. ITs still under factory powertrain since its an 04. Drive it, hard. Dont be afraid. Take it up to 9,000 rpms and shift fast, it should feel like a warm knife through ice cream and if it doesnt, then somethings wrong. Also, after the *hard* test drive when the car is piping hot. Pop the hood and sniff around to make sure you dont smell burning oil. Get on all fours and check the output seal and around the tranny for leaks. Next, ask about all the recalls. If all checks out then I would buy it, bargain with him too, hes not too far off of where it should be (Im a car salesman). That would be my exact inspection if it were me. Good luck.

LoL ^ Your car looks exactly the same... Or is it you??

I did take it to redline a few times, and it did feel incredibly smooth when shifting. I was really suprised actually.. All in all it was perfect, besides the abnormally rougher idle that i'm used to when it's in gear. I asked if he could work w/ me on the price... If he gets it between 16 and 16,500 i will be goin to get it tomorrow.. :P I did ask about the recall thing, and he sent me an attached image of the right vin, and sayin that the recall thing was clean and clear... Haven't asked about the warranty thing yet. I'm guessing since there are them aftermarket parts that the warranty would be voided any way.

What miles does the power train warranty go up to?

Thanks for everyones help...

Wouldn't pay anything over $16K for it. And with the market the way it is he'd take it if he really wanted to sell. Tastefully modded by mods don't add value.

true, but hes not asking that far above retail for it. Private sale is right around 16. Resale for a dealership is right around 15,200. Trade in is 9,500-11,000 pending miles according to manhiem auctions which is what dealerships use, But youll never find an RX8 for trade in value unless its salvage or has high miles :p. GOOD LUCK DUDE, get him down to 16 and Id buy it!!! lol. Although mods dont add value itll save you the $$$ since it already has them.

I just got one and love it! Just make sure you do a carfax or maybe have a mechanic check it out and you'll be fine. The gas mileage isn't great but I think it's worth it.
