I am thinking of buying an RX8 and i have heard that you need to break in the seals on the apex of the rotary to do that you have to not rev over 4,000 rpms for the first 2,000 miles.

Is this true and if it is what do i do if I am looking at a used RX that has like 10 to 20k on it.

 

I have heard of peoples car dying completly because they did not break them in properly.

 

those people's cars that "died completely" probably abused the hell out of them and broke something. even if you keep it around 4k rpm's (which is about where I usually shift) it's still got pretty good acceleration. I only have 1200 miles on mine so I haven't been beating it too hard yet

side note - i wouldn't buy a 1 yr old car with 20k miles, seems a bit excessive

 

600 miles under 4000 rpms for the break in period ....vary the speed when you do it ... I broke mine in that way ......sucked getting to 600 miles ! But after that

 

I subscribed to the "stay under 6000rpm during break-in (600miles)" theory... and also refrained from redlining it until 1000miles or so. Most of that is probably doesn't matter much though... I think the most important rule is to not overrev it until it's completely warmed up- not just the coolant temp, but the oil & motor itself.

 

i stayed under 4k rpm until 1,000 miles, then i started to go over, but kept things easy until 2000 miles. after 3,200 miles, I started to let it rip.

just keep in mind you shouldn't go much higher than 4-5k rpm until the car is warmed up, regardless of how many miles your car has.

 

so exaclty how long does it take for the car is warmed up and ready to go? 15 min.?

 

Since we don't have operating oil pressure gauges, to be on the safe side I wait at least 5 minutes after the coolant temp is at it's normal resting place... 10 minutes if it's really cold out.

 

wait till your coolant gauge is at normal range (half way mark), then wait another 3-5 mins. the reason is that coolant heats up faster than the engine internals.

 

the manual says there is no 'true' break in period..however, if you love the car as much as we do, if you drive it and shift around 4-5000 for the first 600-1000 miles you'll be fine....i have 4800 miles on my car, at about 1500 miles, i did push the revs to the mid 7s and so far, no problems at all...
