I don't understand how you guys grind your gears. Clutch in, shift, clutch out. What's the problem?

Ok. All of the worlds transmission reccomendations have all just been ousted by you, good sir.

You got up to 20,000RPM on a Rotary? Are you...crazy? I wouldn't even rev a full bridge past 12k..

Wow, I spoke too soon. Today Karma got the best of me and I grinded for the first time, pretty bad as well.

I was entering a short highway stretch in 6th and was going ver sluggishly at around 30mph. So I decided to down shift into 3rd, and being a newb at this I clutch-in, raise to 5k RPMs and shift to 3rd, and let the clutch out. PROBLEM! I didn't stick the shifter into 3rd all the way or something so what happened was the shifter began bouncing front and back and grinding in bursts. It looked scary because the shifter was jumping back and forth back and forth while I heard a grinding or loud buzzing sound.

I drove home, horrified, and cursing myself to hell. I'm still pissed about it as I'm writing this.

I havn't noticed any abnormalities yet. What should be the first thing I notice if I grinded them bad?

One grind won't hurt anything.

Overtime a lot of grinding could cause the syncro's to go out in that gear, which would result in you having to double-clutch into that gear.

I never did, but that's just me. I've known a lot of people that have. My thing was that I would let the clutch out a little too abruptly after I shifted, so the car would kind of lurch. Didn't take too long too fix that one.

Psh i've grinded reverse probably 5 times. Sometimes you think you've got it in but it just isn't.

The most important thing is to have the push-the-clutch-down-when-anything-is-wrong! instinct. If you hear a little grinding and you clutch right away, shouldn't be a big deal.

I still wish I knew exactly what damage—no matter how small—occurs when there's grinding. I mean, if we were to open the transmission and take it apart, piece by piece, what pieces would be damaged that we could replace?

Grinding is embarassing. I did it a couple times, but mainly when it was pretty new.

If you can't find 'em, grind 'em.

And the flywheel would most likely shatter and cut off your legs before you ever hit 13,000 RPM.
not to dig up an old arguement or anything, but if you read over my post, it didn't make any reference that 1st gear would reach 13K if you let it out at that speed. It simply referred to the statment that the ENGINE is supposedly capable of handling those RPM's...period.

likely to be so small yull never notice any problems. However, as new yorker stated, it would be interesting to find out the damage. although it would likely be almost impossible to do since ONE grind's problems would be pretty hard to backtrack through all the miles and time put on a tranny. Still interesting though...

No, but Chiefy did!

He made a remark to th extent that he "possibly" hit 13k. Which, at said speeds, going into 2nd, would not happen.

And meh, sure, the engine could probably take a 13k spin...but I'm not setting my car up as a test mule :-D

Apex chatter ---- NO THANKS!
