Hi all:

I was just filling up my 8 and came to the conclusion to cut my tether for the fuel cap. What a royal PIA it is when trying to fillup. There is no place to put the cap and I don't like it to just hang down against the paint. I cut my tether on my Miata 2 weeks after I got it. Have had the 8 over a month an half and I'm still tethered, but not for long. Muuuhahahahaaa!! :D

Anyone else cut their tether to the gas cap?

 

my GT had a holder for it on the gas door...it was very convenient and being that it is the 21st century, you'd think they'd develop a better, more convenient way to fill up...especially with the 8 and having to fill up 5 times a day =P

 

I've decided to cut it loose. It's not like I'll lose it!

 

I put a strip of velcro inside the fuel door, and on the outer edge of the fuel cap. I just don't trust myself to cut the tether

 

Here in New Jersey with our wonderful Full Employment Act for gas station attendants - you can't pump your own gas. As a result, I have these guys constantly bang the tethered gasoline coated gas cap against the car.

 

You can't pump your own gas!!???? No wonder the cost of living is so high.

It is not like it is a highly skilled job that takes years of training. I don't understand why they are not trying to save more tech. related jobs than lower wage ones.

I think that I will put velcro on mine tonight. I must look like the biggest dork gingerly laying my tethered gas cap against my car. I looked for the bracket that should be on the door to support the cap but alas it was not there. Mazda overlooked this in the US market. I am considering buying one of the polsihed doors does anyone know if it is with a bracket or not?

 

The funny thing is that the cheap gas stations are packed with people. These are usually run by a family that employs no one or only a few people!

 

This again? The gas cap fits in the lower right corner of the gas door opening. You don't have to let it hang, and you don't have to cut the tether. I have never had a problem doing this. Try it, you'll like it.

 

This was a tip from someone in an older thread.

You can hang the cord over the latch on the right side of the opening. The cap will then sit just inside the opening. I've done this since day 1, and it works quite well.

 

Most pumps in Massachusetts have removed the locking lever to keep the pump going so you have to stand there holding the lever down. A loose cap can be put in the spot where your fingers normally are to keep the pump going. They still have the overflow stop on them so it's not a problem.

I keep the tether and drape it over the opened door, thus keeping the cap away from the body of the car. Not perfect, but whatever. Such a strange oversight considering how much thought went into other details of the car.

 

That's true... although, I live in New Jersey, and I know one guy who whenever he goes to a gas station, he jumps out of the car and runs over and opens the filler door himself instead of just letting the attendant do it... apparently he really doesn't want to take the chance of any damage to the finish of his Ford Taurus....

 

when i lived in Nj i would always pump my own gas. If they wouldnt let me pump my gas myself i would leave and go somewhere else. But all the stastions in my area new that they dont touch my car. So they let me pay them than i fill it up.

 

i just let it sit on the paint. i have faith that the paint is not made of chocolate and wont chip away or indent, and no i dont just let it crash. I also think more damage is done to your paint job just from normal washing of the car.

 

Yeah, sometimes I do that. People look at you like you just commited a major crime!

I cut the tether and put a tie wrap thru the hole to make a loop.

I just hang it on the latch/hook on the lower right.

 

It will just sit there on the little "ledge" in the lower right of the door opening. I swear. See?

 

This has been discussed at least twice before. Velcro worked for me.

 

No need to cut it: I gently removed my tether (the ends pop loose with a little force) and then used the "car holder" clip (like a cell phone removable belt clip) from my Marware convertible iPod case to hang the gas cap off the door. (See the URL below.)
