Question Suggestions Please

I will explain a little about myself. I am currently in college pursuing a bacholar's degree at UC Davis. I am competing for a Coast Guard program that will provide me with a more than adaquate income for living, so I want to replace my dreadful, practical 1989 Nissan Kind Cab Pickup (oxidizing paint and all). I want to collect cars as one of my hobbies, which was inspired by my father's 1959 Corvette Convertible that he prizes (over me I think) and my passion for sports cars (pretty much the only type of car I ever want to own). So I started talking about this to my dad and came up witht the model year 1989 because it woudl be the same in relation to my dad and his Corvette (he is 50 and I am 20; his car 59 and my would be car 89). He said the beginning or end of a generation are supposed to be the most collectible. So he came up with a 1989 Nissan Z. I looked: UGLY. I thought well its stupid to get a car just because of the year and all that. So I looked at the 1990 Nissan, the 1993 Supra (which are costing almost as much as the RX will), and the first year of the 4th generation RX-7 (can't remember the year right now). So I decided on the Supra, but then I saw how much they where going for and now I am not sure. Can anyone give me any advice, please? I want a sports car that will be collectible or kinda already is, that will also serve me well as my primary car for a few years, and that is between 12,000 to 30,000 to start my collection of with. Thanks.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, since there really isn't any RX-8 related content. Don't be too surprised if it gets moved to the lounge.

Anyway, I don't think a collectible is going to something you'd want to drive day in and day out. Furthermore, it's hard to predict what car will become a collectible. IMO, some of the criteria would be: 1) limited production and/or 2) a truly revolutionary concept.

Then there's the whole issue of what you expect out of your "collectible." Do you really think that a particular car is going to increase in value, and to the point where you can actually sell it for more than you put into it? If that's your goal, then you might as well keep it in a locked garage and only bring it out for shows.

ok here is my .02. i have always felt that you should collect things that you like. don't collect something because it might go up in value. just collect the things that make you happy and if they go up in value that's a bonus! :D
