That said, if I had a garage I wouldn't store oil in the car. I mean, it's not like one day the oil level is gonna drop so suddenly that you can't wait to get home or pull into a gas station. I guess I might carry some if I were traveling though rural areas where it might be hard to find 5W-20.
Yeah. Come to think of it, I never had to use the oil in the trunk. It always gets topped up during routine checks. So it is constantly full to 3/4 full. I guess it's the "rotary owner badge of honour factor".

who needs a funnel just cup your hand and proceed to fill your oil like your pouring sand. And +10 for the tire inflation strap method.

you could always get the oil out from inside... instead of opening the trunk

^Good point, best thing is to cram that holding device with water, paper towels, oil, so that it stays put. Hate hearing stuff sloshing around every corner.

I bought the "essentials" bag from Griots Garage for $20.
http://www.griotsgarage.com/product/car+care/car+care+kits/the+essentials+bag+loaded+with+car+care.do[/URL]

Small enough to fit in the trunk shelf, velcro on bottom and back so it won't slide around. I carry Oil, Premix, funnel and some smaller bottles of car care products in the kit. I keep my four ounce premix bottle in one of the outside pockets for easy fillups.

UPDATE, instead of getting a tray that oil/premix can leak into so I can clean a big mess up later I got one of those vinyl insulated thermal lunchboxes that zips up water tight from Walmart for $4. It has the added benefit of insulating the temp inside it so the oil/premix bottle doesnt heat up to 120 degrees plus like the surrounding temp in your trunk if parked outside all day. This heating up is what causes the air inside opened oil/mix bottles to expand and cause the oil to seep out past the cap and cover the outside of the bottle with the thin oil film and make the mess. Mine holds 3qts premix, 1qt oil no prob, plus at $4 if it does get nasty no big loss.

Its worked like a charm and recommend it to everyone dealing with this.

For anyone with the cargo net. I took some zip ties and made little pockets for my extra oil and premix. Works great, found out the hard way when a qt or oil spilled in my truck. Thats when i came up with using zip ties to keep the oil containers upright.

Just went and checked, no cargo net I got her used. BUT I did find the built in strap thing to hold the tire slime/air pump kit to the side of the trunk so it doesnt slide around, so thanks!

I do the same thing, along with a funnel and towel inside the same strap.

I strap a milk crate in the trunk (using the straps that held the tire repair kit previously). Then the oil container fits in the corner and held in by the strap. All my other misc junk goes in there and doesn't float around the trunk

I put a bottle of oil in a ziplock bag and put it in the well in the trunk. I've got a roadside emergency kit and first aid kit in there, too, so nothing slides around.

In three years I've yet to use that bottle. With oil use being a quart every one to two thousand miles, I've always been able to top off in my garage. Also, a factor in carrying oil was that 5w20 might be hard to find at random gas stations. But 5w30, which I've learned is preferred, is very common. Some time when I think of it I'm going to take that oil bottle out of the trunk.

Just rereading the thread. I like the idea of making a funnel out of an old bottle so it fits right on the new bottle. Clever.

I've simply never seen the need to store oil in my '8. A semi-monthly dipstick check has been fine for me and I rarely have to add much/if any between regular 3K oil changes.

But I don't find fault with those wanting a little extra peace of mind insurance for long trips.

$10 cargo net from autozone and cheap plastic bin. In bin is premix, oil, rags, funnels, zip ties, duct tape, bungies, jumper cables, and a first aid kit. Still have plenty of room for other cargo, too. The cargo net works great. I've used it in other cars, too.

Putting the bottle in a ziploc freezer gallon bag would be extra spill assurance.

I store new oil in my garage. I add oil while my 8 is in the garage.

I've driven my 8 up to 350+ miles away from home (700 miles round trip) and never got into a situation where I had to add oil while on the road. If necessary, I top it off just before leaving on long trips, however. If I had to add oil while on the road, I would just pick up a quart at a gas station. No muss, no fuss.
