Spoiler or no spoiler - that is the question
Hello all,
This is my first post. I've been lurking around for a while and decided to join since I just put a deposit down on an RX-8 with the sports package. Saturday will be the day I trade my '02 MINI Cooper in and take the leap into the RENESIS realm.
Anyway, my question is what is your opinion on getting the spoiler or not. I know it comes down to personal preference but it's fun to get everyone's opinion. The RX8 I have the deposit on doesn't have it or the apperance package and the dealer said it will take a few days before they can get it installed.
So, spoiler or no spoiler??
BTW, who can guess what color I'm getting?? :D :D

Theres been some spoiler polls done already, so if ya do a quick search, you'll get more than a few opinions on it.
And unless your nick is made to screw with people, your getting a red one :D

For me it's a definite and emphatic no.
1. The spoiler adds to the price of the car.
2. The spoiler adds to the weight of the car, which will reduce both gas milage and tire life.
3. The spoiler increases downforce on the rear of the car, which will also reduce gas milage and tire life.
4. I don't like the way they look.
5. I'll probably never have the car going fast enough where a spoiler is truly necessary. It's a commuter/everyday car for me, I have no plan on ever racing it or getting it much faster than 100 MPH.
4 & 5 are obviously very personal reasons, and for somebody who plans on using the car differently from me, or who just likes the way it looks, the spoiler might make sense.

Anyone can take an interior pic of their spoiler looking back? I mean, sit in your car, and take a pic of how much the spoiler blocks view... please?
Just curious since the Mazdaspeed's is super high, and that's my main reason not to get that one. INGs.. mmmm...

The stock spoiler is a almost invisible line from the drivers seat. It's at just the right height to block the headlights from the car behind you if they are about 15 feet away if that helps. Other than that, I can snap some pics with the digicam on sunday.

Like you say, it's personal preference but I prefer the way the car looks without the spoiler. I certainly can see how some would love it but I think it interrupts the natural sweep (or lines, whatever the hell you call the sleek look) of the back-end of the car.

I kinda like the appearance package and rear spoiler, but I like it more it without any spoilers at all. No appearance package, and
definetly not the Mazdaspeed stuff, too much fast and the furious.

I will be buying my 8 soon and I am definitely getting the spoiler. But it does simply come down to personal preference. IMO, the car without the spoiler almost looks like it has something missing on the back end.

I'm pretty geeky and would love having transparent body panels. But I've always liked that sorta thing. Maybe get some Lexan cast in teh right shape for a hood! Not very practical in day to day btu I would love to play with it ocasionally.
About the wing, yes it is personal preference. I too like the car without it, but in certain colors I think the spoiler add's a lot to it, hence why I got one. But if I had a black or a blue car I wouldnt get the spoiler.

At least an RX-8 is a car that you can put a spoiler on. There are plenty of cars out there with spoilers that look a bit silly. "Mama's going to fly to day care to drop off those kids! Thank goodness she's got that spoiler to hold down the rear end!" :D

One thing I don't like about my spoiler that I haven't seen mentioned. When I check my blind spot to the right at night, before a lane change, the reflection off the spoiler makes me sometimes think a car is in my blind spot.
Maybe I just need glasses.
I like the look of the Mazdaspeed spoiler. The stock one reminds me of the Eclipse.

I bought mine without the spoiler, but I too thought something was missing, I like the Mazdaspeed spoiler the best but it is just too expensive. So I opted for the factory spoiler and had it put on a month ago. It does give the car a more aggresive look, the back did need something with the front fender curves giving it a crouched waiting to attack look. It doesn't really block my vision, and the box that it came in from Trussville was so light I don't think it really adds much weight. I'll probably go with the Mazdaspeed one in a year or two when the price will probably be less than half. I thought my car looked great with no spoiler, I think it looks better now.

rear view
I thought this view looks pretty good too. Oh yea, don't forget to show her the fender strakes and front mud guards, just don't tell her how much $$$$$ the strakes are.
