Speeding ticket - damn the luck!

Well, I got my first RX-8 speeding ticket. It had to happen, I guess. On my way to work, a mile from my house, there's a 3.5 mile stretch of empty 2-lane. I thought it was a 45mph zone, and had the cruise set for 50. Well, it was a 30mph zone, and the cop clocked me at 51 (21 over). Ugh.

The only ticket that might be on my record is more than 2 years old (it was like 53 in a 45), and it might have been expunged, I can't remember. How bad is this going to be for my insurance, and can I avoid the rate hike with defensive driving or deferred adjudication, or is 51 in a 30 too much over for those options? Thanks in advance for advice.

Oh yeah, I should mention this is in Texas (Pearland, south of Houston).

I guess I should be thankful I was on the way to work, and therefore not in TOO much of a hurry to get there, if you know what I mean... You guys know how much fun the 8 is when you're in a hurry.

I dont know about texas but here in california you can take traffic school to avoid a point on your record and insurance hikes. I just got my first speeding ticket in the 8 last week. I was going 80 on a 65mph toll road. It was midnight and the cop was using his radar gun. I couldnt believe he gave me a ticket for going 80 on a toll road after midnight. Should have gotten that radar detector.

I thought I'd have gotten a ticket the first week of owning the car...so far so good.

^^^ you're doomed.

speedbear: I'm not up to speed on TX dmv policies but most states let you take traffic school to avoid having things hit your record. I'd check your state's dmv site and see if there's any info there

Well at least you have an appropriate name now.

Seriously though, that sucks - I got my first ticket in the same way. I couldn't really fight it, since ignorance isn't an excuse, so I just sucked it up and took the class. I was 25 over (going 50 in a 45...which had dropped to 25 for construction) following a friend through an unfamiliar area so I never saw the sign or knew of the drop.

I got lucky - the cop was nice about it since he could tell I genuinely didn't know, and dropped it down to violation of a traffic control device. I took the class and moved on...not sure how that would have worked had I gotten an actual speeding ticket.

Good luck with everything!

honestly... would you rather have police ticketing you or have gangbangers and drug dealers around you?

To the OP, I lived in TX for almost 20yrs and if the laws haven't changed in the past 5 then all you have to do is ask the judge for a "deferred judification" or a "prayer for judgment" whatever it is called now. What this does is lowers the ticket to like 9 over and you pay court costs plus a very very small fine, then just not get another speeding ticket in that county for a preset amount of months or yrs and it's like your ticket never existed. It won't even go on your insurance. Now if you get a ticket within the probation period you will get hit for both tickets.

Or you can just take a defensive driving course before your court date and bring in the certificate and present it and the ticket goes away, might still have to pay court costs though, not sure.

I would check the dmv but traffic school should help them "overlook" the ticket

OP ----

=> 25 over means no defensive driving, you should be fine if you haven't taken one in the last year and don't have a CDL.

And for all the donut comments,

what you need to do is dig up some of the troll-based posts and print them off. Bring them to the judge/officer and tell them that this 1.3l car is not capable of going that fast.
