Thanks for the heads up on this site.

They are in new jersey, so ground shipping should be next day for me in NYC.

I need new plugs and a crank position sensor, after my car started idling wildly up and down and stalling out. The CEL they read said crank position sensor.

My local shop (not dealership, I'm out of warrenty) was going to get the parts from Mazda later today, but I'm calling to tell them not to and I plan on ordering online which is quite a bit cheaper. For the same price (as just the wires and sensor), I am getting plugs, the sensor, plus plug wires and 4 coils, which after reading here for a few hours, seems like I should replace with 30K of hard city driving.

Hopefully the shop won't charge too much more than they quoted me for labor after adding on the coils and plug wires.

You should have got the parts (plugs, wires, coils, crank position sensor) from a vender on here and install them your self. Its not that hard. Plugs, Wires and Coils are like 30 min swap. Its all right there.
What happen to your crank position sensor? install a under drive pulley wrong?

Dominion,

Thanks for your input on this. I am not sure at all why the crank position sensor was indicated by a CEL. I have not done any upgrades. As I mentioned, the car started going wacky at Idle, RPM high and low, very brief battery light indicator, then stalling out. I was able to get it to the shop, where they diagnosed the CEL and suggested new plugs. I am adding to that the coils and plug wires install.

Since I am in Manhattan and have no garage or appropriate tools, (plus no experience with even basic maintenance - about the extent of it is putting on clear corner lights) I thought it best to have the shop do the install, plus they suggested a coolant flush. The flush may not be necessary, but since I Idle alot, constant stop and go traffic, I thought after 30K and 5 years it cant hurt.

The car has been driving rough at a certain RPM for the past month or so. I need to travel outside the city in 2 days, so I need the car back in running condition. Anyone know of a good rotary shop in the NYC/ northern NJ area? The shop I am using in East Harlem does seem to know a bit about rotaries and some of the RX-8 issues, so that is good.

On another note, I am hoping to have this car running for 5-7 more years. It still looks great (people think it's new) and there is nothing else in car land I would want except for the new Lotus 2+2 coming out, which I can't afford anyway (since I spend alot more on stereo gear than cars). I would love my next car to be fully electric, as I tend to do mostly short trips.

BTW I did rent a Lotus Elise once for 2 days when Enterprise used to rent them. Man, that was a fun car, but I have to say it was not a total let down when I returned from vacation and drove my RX-8 again.

I will NEVER order from these guys again. Their lack of honesty about about what is in stock in what warehouse has set my whole repair back several days, because they only sent 2 spark plugs, and not the 4 that were supposed to arrive.
