Some questions from a (hopefully) soon-to-be owner

I'm happy to say that this is my first post on a board I have been stalking a lot recently. I'm graduating in May and I'll be damned if I don't reward myself. My girlfreind has an old RX7 so it was only natural that I check one of these out. After one test drive I was hooked. What a cool car. The fact that in two weeks of looking hard, I haven't seen one on the road makes me even more excited (gotta love standing out . ). I have some questions before buying, as I have some time (gotta wait until school is out right??) before I will be buying.

I have some specific things I want on the car, so lets say the dealer doesn't have that exactly on the lot.

1. I need a sunroof, and some of the cars don't have one. The sales guys says they can put one in. Do they replace the entire roof with a sunroof ready roof, or do they cut a hole, etc?

2. I really like the Mazdaspeed spoiler, and may either try get it on new, or sometime in the future. Should I try get an RX8 without a rear spoiler on it, or are the holes not an issue?

3. On a side note, are there any aerodynamic uses for a lip spoiler? I think they look kinda cool, but always wondered this.

4. If I get a Bose stereo, are there any difficulties adding an amp/sub? I see there are PIE adapters, I'm more wondering if its worth getting.

5. Lastly, any other buying tips for the '05 models? I would liek to use getting some add ons as a bargaining point, but not really sure of their worth, or cost to the dealer.

Thanks a ton, and I hope to spend many days here

Don't let any dealer cut a hole in your roof. Just find a dealer that will work with you to get the exact car you want. Remember, they just want to get them off their lot (esp 05's) so unless you get a HUGE deal, make them work for you, not the other way around.

And welcome! I don't know the answer to any of the other questions off-hand but I'm sure other peeps will answer.

1. don't let them do it, if u want one, buy one with it.
2. if its mazdaspeed, the holes are the same as with the stock spoiler. Some aftermarkets are the same i believe. (not to sure)
3. it looks cool i don't believe there is a significant difference
4 and 5 im don't know cause im not into sound systems, and im not much of a good bargainer

I would have to say definitely no to having an aftermarket sunroof put in. I would definitely say the sunroof is a must in this car, and the dealer did try to convince me that they would put one in also... my understanding is that it isn't worth it. Way too many problems can rise from this...

Sounds like you may be looking for a car with a little more on it then you want to pay.... I was that way. Don't be afraid to look for an RX-8 that is a year old or less because this can help you get what you want on it and save a little bit of money. The RX-8 rocks and welcome!

1. putting in a sunroof aftermarket will cause it to leak sooner or later. you don't want that.

2. If you buy one with a stock spoiler, i have heard that the stock spoiler leaves an indent marking that is not covered by the mazdaspeed spoiler.

3. some lip spoilers reduce drag... i think the euro lip spoiler does. don't quote me.

4. you can add a sub or amp if you wish, not a problem. only problem is if you plan to do anything with the headunit. that becomes a pain.

5. if you want add ons, i say just buy it from a vendor on here instead of buying from dealer. they charge for installs. that is, unless you can get installs free.

For the Bose Sound System, the upside to getting an 05 is it has current enough Firmware to support MP3s/iPods. The 04s have to have the firmware updated for it to work, but this just depends on if you wanted to use an MP3/iPod, but subs should still work with it.

you don't want an aftermarket sunroof. The roof of the Rx-8 is NOT straight. It curves, and you'll have issues trying to get an aftermaket one to fit properly and not leak.

The MS spoiler will install in the stock spoiler holes, but if your car has no spoiler, it can easily be installed afterwards. My car was GT + Navi, no app package. I had the dealership install the MS spoiler afterwards without issue.

I'm curious if we are talking about the same spoiler. The one I am referring to has the aluminum supports, with painted plastic on top. If we are, then it's all good . I really like the way it looks and saw a customer car with it on too.

As for the sunroof, I figured as much that having them put one in probably ment cutting a hole, not getting a whole new roof for me. Maybe my concerns are more clear by giving an example. They have a Velocity Red with sunroof and wing (the standard single piece plastic (?) one. I'm not a huge fan of this spoiler, so I'm wondering if they could take it off, and put on the Mazdaspeed one. Hopefully they would charge me less for doing this before I pick it up.

Thanks for all the help so far, the response seems very much typical of the community as a whole.. I love it.

Painted plastic? There is only one MS spoiler. Here's my car with it: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/719164

The OEM spoiler runs something like $300. You might be able to get that much back, but it's not worth sweating over.

That is indeed the spoiler I would like, so it would be great to get that one put on before the car leaves the lot. Thanks for the quick picture to help me out

buy it online from rosenthal <sp> for about $800 or $900. Your local dealer will likely charge you MSRP for it. Either way you'll likely have to wait for them to order it and have it shipped over.
