When I had the mechanic replace my plugs at the last servicing, I should have taken a picture of them/had him keep them.

Glad to see your dealer replaced them. They need replacing every 30K at least along with ignition coils.

Hell, your lucky. When I changed mine at around 80k, they didn't even have the prongs which means they were probably never changed, and for some reason I still have them .

Nope, not the first owner. Soon as I got it I changed everything, and checked for all recalls etc...., who ever had it must not of done too much with it, that or they didn't think the plugs needed changed like they do.

You have to wonder how much, if any, regular servicing they did then. How many miles on it when you bought ur 8?

It had around 76k, and now over 95k. Very clean car, except the battery was bad when I bought it. After my big tune up I get around 22-25mpg now. Records from mazda showed they were there quite a bit.

Our plugs are touted as being able to last 100K miles like most modern cars these days so I can see an average owner and average uninformed dealer thinking the plugs should be fine.

The sad truth is the amount of buildup we get on the plugs kills them quickly. You can't really effectively clean them with an abrasive but I wonder if there is an effective plug cleaning chemical that won't remove the iridium coating? I know there was a thread where a guy was trying it out, I think with the BG-44 stuff but didn't have much success.

I'm thinking if we could clean the buildup off the plugs without damaging the coating they would be re-usable and at $80 per set that would be nice to be able to do.

This is very true, especailly since people say oh 100k and never have to replace them until then. What about a low acidic liquid to soak them for a short time, then use an air gun to blast them?

I think if you do a proper seafoam treatment once or twice a year (in the auxiliary intake ports, not via the gas) that should have a strong cleaning effect on the plugs. It's fairly well demonstrated that it cleans out carbon deposits on the port openings and other places, so I'd imagine it's good for plugs too. I do it every spring.

I don't know much about spark plugs though: is there anything else about them that "wears out"? Or do they just get dirt / carbon / corrosion buildup and that's it?

You bought a multi pack of coke cans? Why not just buy a bottle.
