I'm wondering what's the opinion of the board regarding the build date. Since I am just about to buy an RX-8, I need to decide whether I order one to be built (and probably wait several months to get it) or eventually accept one that's in stock somewhere. In the second case, what is the build date "cut-off" from which the initial issues are most likely resolved? For instance, from what date was there no "port campaign" fumbling with the cars and the like.
Is it possible at all to determine such a date?

Dunno whether or not a new built will be any different. Since we haven't heard from Mazda about any recalls, I doubt they have changed anything as of yet.
As far as having to wait, it might not take that long for you. I ordered on 09/01/03, build date set for 1st week of October, and estimated delivery in mid-November.

in the FWIW dept, mine is SN xxx01129 ; built 5/23, first boat, etc.

Mine is probaby as close to any as 'the perfect' RX-8: no problems cited by most that have problems, I attained over 22mpg on mostly pure highway driving early before 2000 miles w/DSC on; just got over 22 w/ mostly fully off and some city, mostly highway trying to stay under 3500rpm (about 68.75mph). I don't think there is a magic VIN cutoff for any problems. Except maybe the oil pan thing but I have only ever seen the light on one time.

I've had none of the major problems others have reported so maybe the earlier the VIN, the better the car, hehe.

I get 19mpg city and 22mpg on the highway. I drive my RX-8 for fun so I drive fairly hard too. So far no engine or oil lights. Has not used up much oil at 2600miles. Great acceleration up to 9000rpm.

I've used both regular and premium gas with no noticeable difference between the two. (This may change as compression increases and/or temperature rises.)

My only suggested improvements so far are:
1) use more heat shielding - i can feel heat from engine sometimes
2) use all season radials instead of these soft, sticky tires with low tread wear rating
3) add 2-4gallons to the gas tank because of the low gas mileage
None of these things are affected by VIN so I'd say go ahead and buy the RX-8 ASAP.

All-season radials? You gotta be kidding. Remember, this is a sports car, not a Buick. Hard, long life tires are the reason many RX-7's ended up in a ditch - you gotta have tires that are as capable as the suspension with them.

I agree on gas tank size - I was surprised to see it's as small as it is. The '89-91 2nd gen RX-7 had a 17-18 gallon tank, and I think the 3rd gen had one of similar or more size. Maybe they'll add gas tank capacity on the model freshening in a few years.

while a larger gas tank might be a tad more convenient (in it's daily driver role lately I have to fill mine every 3 days or less) it would probably compromise the size and balance of the car to make it larger. the tires - you'd be hard pressed to find a common 'all season radial' in the 18" size. It sounds like you might be better off with the automatic with it's 16" tires; but that's the problem with the US marketing only the auto w/ 16" - I guess you could buy a set of 16" from someone soon and then be better able to get all seasons for your car!
