So I was driving..

You're very lucky. It better be a lesson for you to slow down when it comes to yellows.
Ever since I've gotten my license, I've been pulled over three times and all three times I've been issued a ticket.
Only, lucky me, none of them showed up on my record. The first two were at least 18 months apart and taken off by traffic school, and the last, the officer failed to show up to court.

I went to Taco Bell tonight, or last night w/e.. I guess I was hungry.. Anyways, I order the food, leave and drive straight home. I'm driving, going 50ish on a local road.. I see this car behind me speeding up and slowing down a couple of times. I can't see what car it is since it's dark. Up ahead I see the lights turning yellow, I'm like 20 yards away from passing the intersection, I decide to run the red light, I ain't stopping, so I don't.. I ran the light just when it turned red. I was looking back, the car behind me breaks hard. I laugh and say to myself "loser"-- After that, I see white, blue & red lights popping up behind me.. I'm like hell no!! ..
I'm like ****, another ticket, since I had one in December for speeding. I made a thread about it. Anyway, I stop right away.. The cop starts walking.. I'm trying to take my license out. The cop says "What's up bro?" I'm like "yooo" (scared girls voice).. He asked me why I ran the light, where was I heading, and how old was I. I told him 20, heading home, and well, I didn't have time to stop.. He smiles and said "Do you have your license with you?" I say yes and show it.. He tells me to keep it. Asks me if I have a clean record, I said yes, he says he believes me. And asks if I have ever gotten a ticket.. I told him I had my first last month for speeding. He asks me if I paid it and all, I said yes, and went to traffic school.
He then says, "I don't want to give you a ticket bro, get out of here quick before I change my mind" - I'm like whoa, thanks sir..
When he's about to leave, he says "Nice car btw" -- I laugh..
I guess my feelings towards cops have changed.. I love them! Wooooooo!

you are just very lucky seeing a good mood officer
most of the time, they will just pull me over even i have done nothing wrong (not speeding or whatsoever), and look for things that can be ticketed
btw, my exhaust is not even loud, its just a legamax

I love how certain people act as if they've never ran a red light before and it's terribly wrong. We've all done it! That was a good experience with the police. Here in NY it's a good experience ieven if the cop tickets you but manages to be polite and professional.

How many times can one person contradict themselves in one thread?
Running a red light is just that.....running a red light. What part of that don't you fully comprehend?
You got very lucky and I see many tickets in your future.................better cool it some.

Please don't run any more red lights, even if it's 'just barely'. You got lucky, congrats.

don't do it again! you are risking someone else's limbs (or life) not just your car when you "decide" on something like that. That is murder!
you said it yourself!!

sir george, i've ran red lights too and it IS terribly wrong. it's better to get tickets than ran over someone later on. if you are getting tickets that means you aren't a safe driver to be on the road.

I don't buy Kool-Aid
+1 I see it everyday in Vegas!
Dont know about the rest but the law out in Vegas is; "If your front end is on and or about and over the cross walk, your ok". If its not and you can come to a hard stop its; "you ran a red light."

Not here. I've cut it close on a few occasions only to see 2 or 3 cars immediately behind me to run the lights themselves. If I feel it's safer to proceed through when the light has immediately turned red upon entering the intersection rather than causing a pileup when I slam the brakes on for a yellow...
Or even if they're not that close. One time I stopped for a light that, by DC/NoVa standards, was kind of a 50/50 call. There was a car maybe half a block behind - which would usually be OK. But the lady wasn't focused, and was surprised when I stopped. She slammed on her brakes and spun the steering wheel over. Fortunately she locked her front wheels and kept skidding straight ahead. No cross-traffic in the intersection, so I let myself roll past the light. She came to a stop exactly where I had stopped before I realized she wasn't going to make it. Just touched my back bumper. I was in my Accord, and she was in something full size.
Turned out the woman was 7 months pregnant, and was on her way to work for the last time to clean things out before going on maternity leave. She was thinking about everything in the future. I am so glad that a) she panicked 100% and skidded rather than swerved, and b) that I always check my mirror when stopping and was able to move forward.
Technically, I flat ran that light. I was stopped and it was red when I scooted forward.
Anyway, with the OP's tale, if I had someone behind me speeding up and slowing down like he says the cop was, I might have gone through the red, too.

When I'm driving down this one road by my house I have all the lights timed so they'll turn green right when I get to them, and I leave everyone behind who's waiting for the light, a lot of people do this, so if someone runs a light driving perpendicular to me, even just barely, it could cause a crash
Avoid entering an intersection until you're sure the cross traffic has stopped. They probably teach that in driver's ed, but I never took driver's ed.

I took drivers ed. Hell, I'm a great driver imo.. Just made a mistake and miscalculated the light. But yeh, mistakes like these cause accidents, fortunate for me, no one was on the other intersection. I've learned my lesson. Good thing that cop pulled me over, now I'm scared to run the light even when it's yellow.

Geez, take it easy fellas. From what i am reading this guy was at that fine line when the light turns yellow and you either have to jump on the brakes or commit thorugh the light and he was just a bit late. Lights have 1-3 second pause before turning green anyways. Not like he came up on the intersection with the light clearly red and just blew through it. Though it shouldnt be common practice we ALL have done it.

My take on this is....its a decision that has to be made at the moment it happens, and sometimes afterwards you realize it was the wrong one.
I drove a semi for a couple years and now a 25ft box truck. The DOT rules for us in the big trucks was simple, regarding if you can stop before entering the intersection.
"If you can stop you MUST STOP, if you cannot stop you MUST NOT STOP"
This can be a difficult decision in a big truck. at 55MPH it takes a fully loaded semi (40 Tons) 100 yards to come to a complete stop.
Please keep this in mind when changing lanes in front of a big truck.
Have a great day.. and please drive safely out there.

I'll say this.. I wasn't planning on hitting red when I would of passed the intersection. I guess it happened for a reason.

saying i barely ran the light is like saying DUDE I ALMOST HAD YOU.
the standard yellow light is a lil over 4 seconds long. i count in my head when i see one and judge by where im at...sometimes im entering the intersection as it turns red but i never flat out run one...too dangerous.
fyi this wasnt a random bump...didnt check till i already posted but the OP linked this in another thread...lol

damn you lucky
I rolled thru a stop sign the cop just stormed towards me I thought it was some street racer. got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign.
I also got ticket for careless driving. was a bit high after gokart racing, passed the line on yellow and turned left on red burning the front tires (had a maxima).

Running the red light black and white thinking is where people like you get rear ended for attempting to do the right thing...
Yellows have different time intervals based on traffic flow and speed limits of the area there is no universal standard. country roads with low traffic and low speeds will have a quicker change time while freeway interesections will have longer ones.
Always if you can safely for you and the person behind you stop for the red. hell if you have to trick someone by squeezing the brakes on green in anticipation of an upcoming do so.
BUT! Lets run some numbers for fun. You're traveling 45mph and 100 ft from the intersection and the light which was green turns yellow. At 45mph you're traveling 66ft per second. If we plug in our "universal standard" of 4 seconds of yellow. we 've got exactly 2 seconds (those other two seconds dont matter as we'd already be through the intersection hell technically we dont even have a full two) given the distance based on our rate of speed to react. The one huge varible that no one can account for is human reaction time. Crash recreation scientist use an avg of 1.5 seconds. So given this assumption the lights been yellow for 1.5 second (which means hes traveled atleast another 66 ft before even reacting with braking) which puts his distance from the intersection now at roughly 44ft. If he were to hit the brakes at this point he'd stop in the intersection or be rear ended. (this is for those people angry he didnt react appropriately to the yellow)
Use your head people. Simply put theres no need to villify every red light runner regardless of your personal vendettas for them. Yeah its unsafe, but there are circumstance that dictate its a far greyer determination then the black and white you'd like to have it.

lol! Yea, I was showing the other OP in that other thread the same situation he had. Running the red light. Barely. 2 years later and I never did run a red light again. Even for a second.
