the VIN numbers do denote the RX-8 as the FE, right?? hmmmm... wonder what they'll call the next RX-7...

Yes. FE is the chassis code for the RX-8. There was a picture on the RX-7 forum a few weeks ago that clearly showed this. The RX-7 will also be an FE, because it will share the same platform as the RX-8. Just like how the current BMW 325i and M3 are both E46s.
