Shifting Through Neutral

K i'm an idiot and this could be a stupid question but i dunno. anyways i noticed my friend shifts thro neutral as he brakes and i was wondering wut it does. does it help the engine or is it bad?

and another question i have is that i got an automatic 8 and i was thinking about purchasing the greddy E-manage. Would it have any affects on my car? i read it but dont really understand it. Please explain in simpliar terms. I'm an idiot. I'm also thinking about purchasing the K&N intake but since i got an automatic would it actually even do anything to my car?

Any help woiuld be great thanks.
I also love this forum i read everything here everyday

coasting to a stop in neutral isn't going to hurt anything.

some people will tell you it's not a good idea simply because in neutral you can't go faster, but that's easily solved when you need to get going again.

Is your friend driving an Automatic or a Standard? (I'm an idiot too)

I've got a MT so I can't really help you with the other question. You could post a topic in the aftermarket performance section (if you haven't already).

I don't suspect there is an issue with putting the car in neutral while breaking if he has a MT. I think it's a trade off, wear the brakes save the clutch.. Or use the clutch and save the brakes. HOwever, in an emergency situation not having the car in gear could create a problem.

Ithink the worst thingyou can do w/the automatic is put itinto sport mode and slow the car down by down shifting instead of using the brakes. Not that harmful from 4th to 2nd but if youre going 30 mphand then drop to 1st to slow downinstead of pressing the brakes -- you feel the whole car tense up. We dont have a clutchless SMG M3 here keepthat in mind --its a slush box w/a torque converter. As longas you arent doing anything that stupid youshould be fine.
