And she blows!!

well not quite, but pretty close.

started my car this morning after work. it was -18, typical cold car start, slow crank or two then fired up, then this happened, it reved between 2k-3k rmp rapidly for probably 30 seconds. i figured the fuel lines were a little slushy so i just let it go. went back inside then came out 15 minutes later to go home, car still running at the normal 800rpm, no chugging seemed totally fine. i hit the gas just to check and it reved smoothly to about 3k rpm then would refuse to go any higher. its as if it were hitting a rev limiter, it would just keep bouncing off it. decided to try driving and its as if the motor had NO power, almost like it was running on one rotor, it took forever to work through the gears. so i stop at a gas station, get on the mobile rx8club.com website and do a bit of research and somebody reported the same problem but it was fine once there car fully warmed up..

(breathe's in)

let it idle for about another 10 minutes and still no improvement. so i decide to take my chances and trug along on the high way home (about 8 miles) so i get on the on ramp and once again, takes a very long time to hit 3k in each gear but once on the highway i was able to hold 45 nicely in 6th gear. but now this is the other wierd part, if i started down a hill, i would hit 50mph and its as if a governor (sp) kicked in, the engine shut down and slowed me back to about 47 mph.

bottom line is i made it home and posted straight here, im waiting for the dealership to open so i can schedule an appointment right away but i just wanted to see what you guys had to say.

Sounds like you were running in limp mode. Could be a number of things. Your omp may have failed for one.

The oil metering pump. Its what lubricates the seals and rotor housings. Its basically a pump that injects engine oil into the rotor housings to put it in laymans terms. Your best bet is to just take it to a dealer.

No "Check Engine Light"?
how many miles on your spark plugs, coils, and wires?
Any flooding events recently?
Any exhaust mods or do you still have OEM catalytic converter?
If so, how many miles on the cat?

Lots of questions...each may lead a clue to your issue.

wow, cant believe i left that out, YES the CEL was on right when i started the car. everything is completely stock, the cat was replaced just a few thousand miles ago so still pretty new. car was flooded on the lot when i bought it about 6 months ago, but i started after a while on a jumper battery. coils, plugs, wires, not sure. the car has 57,xxx miles. bought it with 50,000, i dont know if the previous owner changed them or not.

just went outside to start the car before i call the tow truck and see if anything happens, started up just fine, reved it a little bit and it rose straight to 5000 rpm... now what the heck is going on?!! lol i guess i will still just drop it off because the CEL is still on, hopefully i will get a rental car.

update, drove to the dealership without a problem, car felt brand new, but i decided to leave it with them just for the heck of it and see if they find anything wrong.

told you to replace plugs/ coils in this thread https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/replace-parts-go-straight-compression-210912/

This is what happens when we give advice and people don't listen
And people wonder why we're so cranky all the time...

Posting/getting the CEL is pretty crucial.

You can get the code read at any autozone, pep boys, type places for free. Bring the code back here and search for it, I'm sure there are many threads already dedicated to it.

That would be my starting point, anyways.

i did take your guys advise lol. they are on back order at my dealership but i ordered them back when i originally posted that thread! i would have got the BHR but i didnt have the money at the time.

anyways, mazda just called and they couldnt find anything wrong with the car. the tech assumed it was most likely a slight case of flooding due to the cold. (he did look at the coils and plugs and saw no reaso to change them, said they didnt look fouled. i made a point for them to look) they have a shuttle driver coming to get me now so he said he would give me a more indepth observation when i get there. he was very quick to point out i was coming up to the 60,000 mile service, i can only wonder what thats going to cost!!

I was just gonna say that there are a ton of cases of people having really weird stuff going on with their 8 when it gets extremely cold out but then it is perfectly fine when it warms up some.
