Scary at 6000 and up!

Now don't get me wrong... I redline my car at least once a week. My old car was a Prelude and I redlined that thing on daily basis. But for some reason, when I reach the 6000-9000rpm, it freaks me out a bit. I always think the engine is gonna rip apart. Maybe its the increasing sound or the vibration.. Or maybe I just care about my car too much to push it all the way? Does anyone else feel like that too?

I am with you on this one. Never felt nervous redlining my RSX Type S. The car felt like a rock. I am just not comfortable doing the same with my RX-8. Maybe because of too many blown up engine stories

I feel nervous to redline my car because I saw a cop follow me.

6000 is when all the fun begins. I love the sound of the engine at that range. Mine only sounds louder, but still very smooth. I rev to redline at least twice a day, once a week just won't cut it.

Try to remember that the rotary is not a piston engine, and that when the tac reads 9K the rotors are only doing 3k. You would have to read 21K on the tac to have the rotors turning over 7K.

If you think about it, that is why you see the power band on the rotary start around 6K because the rotors are at 2K. That is the same RPM on many piston engines when they start to develop their initial power.

On the track, if you don't keep the RPM between 6K and redline, you get left in the dust.

Some of us are looking to raise the RPM limit for that very reason. At 10K the rotors are only at 3300K. The only thing that is high revving is the crankshaft.

That might put a little persective on the RPM issue regarding the rotary engine for you.

I get no vibration at all. I feel better about this car at redline than any other car I've ever owned at 75% of redline.

scared???

AHHAHAHA.... Sorry, I would'nt be scared, I think i keep my car in that rpm range all the time, I have about 57k miles on mine already, And I drive the hell out of it, I shift right before the rev limiter kicks in about 9200 rpm, I have had no problems with this car. I have blown up many rotarys but never because of redlining it. Mainly they had cooling problems, and or were boost/tuning related.

Enjoy your car, its made to rev

The tach is off by ~500 rpms up high anyway, so 9k on the tach is actually about 8500.

When I rev the car, I never shift 'till I hear the 'beep'.

You're much more likely to kill a piston engine by overrevving it than a rotary. All the rotary's motive parts go roundy-roundy (or direct rotational action, if you will). In a piston engine the pistons go up & down & also lifters/valves, both of which are common failure points when those engines 'blow'.

I'll bet the Renesis engine could rev @ 10k rpms pretty much forever without a problem. In fact, wankel engines are quite happy to rev at a constant high rpm. That and their low weight is why they are often used in airplanes.

I have to watch the tach all the time cause when I have the radio up and I am cruising with a good song on, Ill look down and be turing 7500rpm....it sneaks up on you...its so quiet and smooth.

This car at redline feels like my miata at about 4k rpm.....I dont get any vibration, and the sound is pure heaven.

I live at 9500rpm!!!

All the vibration!?!?!?!?! The rotary gets smoother as the engine rpm increases. Where are getting vibration from? It shouldn't be from the engine. There is more vibration at idle than there is at higher rpms. The engines are tested to higher limits than 9K.

What do you call the crankshaft in a rotary if not a crankshaft?

I think the S2000 is way scarier from 6000 rpm and up than the RX8, but by no means is it a bad thing. I love hearing both the rotary and the F20C at 6k+ rpm. While the Renesis is much more smooth, the F20C SCREAMS was vtec kicks in, pulling much harder. Having driven both cars, anything with that doesn't go up to 9k rpm just seems too little!

Ther is one ignition from each rotor for every e-shaft revolution. There are 3 faces to the rotor, therefore three iginitions for each rotor revolution.
