RX8's replacement engine failed test drive? Need another?

Well my car had stalling problems that eventually led to the engine and cat being replaced. You can read the long story here: https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...t=rx8+stalling

I started a new thread because that old one is too cluttered, basically the dealer replaced my engine for free and then called me saying the car continued to stall with the new engine in. They had Mazda technicians look at the car and they figured it could be a bad fuel pump or throttle body. Both were cleared as working fine, and a compression test on the new engine proved that it had indeed failed after only been driven 5 miles. The dealer has another engine on order to be put in the car.

My question is what the heck is up with these engines. Is this just incredible bad luck on my part, or are these engines really this unreliable? My original engine got 60k before failing. This one got 5 freaking miles. Will this next engine hold up? I just want my car to operate normally and it has gotten to the point where it seems it never will.

Chill.

"The Elephant and the Blind Men"* is a parable regarding the fact that people tend to experience only a tiny portion of reality, and then assume all reality is like the tiny portion they've experienced. You, my friend, are a blind man.

All you read or hear or experience about Renesis engines is bad. That's because your Renesis experiences are all bad - and the news you read and hear about the Renesis is bad news. That's because bad news is news - and good news is not news. You don't read or hear about the vast majority of RX-8 owners who don't give their engines a second thought. You don't read or hear about the vast majority of RX-8 owners who just drive and enjoy their car as much as any other car. You don't read or hear about the vast majority of RX-8 owners who have their car serviced at routine intervals and have no major problems. And why should you? People with problems are the ones who make noise, as well they should. That's just human nature.

Over time, any car forum on the internet becomes more and more a Complaint Department. Go to the forum for pretty much any car that's been out awhile and, by and large, you'll read stories about problems. Few people bother to find their car forum, join it, and then start a thread saying that their Nissan engine runs fine and that they hardly ever think about it.

Get it?

*THE ELEPHANT AND THE BLIND MEN

Once upon a time, there lived six blind men in a village. One day the villagers told them, "Hey, there is an elephant in the village today."
They had no idea what an elephant is. They decided, "Even though we would not be able to see it, let us go and feel it anyway." All of them went where the elephant was. Everyone of them touched the elephant.
"Hey, the elephant is a pillar," said the first man who touched his leg.
"Oh, no! it is like a rope," said the second man who touched the tail.
"Oh, no! it is like a thick branch of a tree," said the third man who touched the trunk of the elephant.
"It is like a big hand fan" said the fourth man who touched the ear of the elephant.
"It is like a huge wall," said the fifth man who touched the belly of the elephant.
"It is like a solid pipe," Said the sixth man who touched the tusk of the elephant.
They began to argue about the elephant and everyone of them insisted that he was right. It looked like they were getting agitated. A wise man was passing by and he saw this. He stopped and asked them, "What is the matter?" They said, "We cannot agree to what the elephant is like." Each one of them told what he thought the elephant was like. The wise man calmly explained to them, "All of you are right. The reason every one of you is telling it differently because each one of you touched the different part of the elephant. So, actually the elephant has all those features what you all said."
"Oh!" everyone said. There was no more fight. They felt happy that they were all right.

^ Just for the heck of it I did start such a "I have no issues" thread, but it didn't get much attention, because as New Yorker so articulately cites good news isn't news around automotive forums.

Failed after 5 miles, maybe you should have a talk with the person that fixed your engine.

All I'm saying is I havent had my car since the beginning of July because of the stalling. The new engine didn't work? I'm assuming that it was a installation mistake, but I have had my car since march and I have driven it for less time than it has been in the shop..I believe I have every right to complain and come to a forum that is about a specific car and it's known problems. Honestly this thread was made to see if this ever happened to anyone else and if so, what was the outcome. If all you want to read is good stuff about the car then join the facebook rx8 fan page.

So you got a car with a toasted engine and decide to take it out on us?

My engine has 108,000 miles on it with no problems so far. It missfires occasionally, but I am getting new coils tomorrow and hopefully that will be the end of that.

For the record, you got a "REMAN" engine, NOT new.

and there is a chance that the side seals might be **** up at factory, since Mazda does not have any pre-cut seals in the US, the factories here grind those seals down themselves. which increase the chance of **** ups.

Mazda's messed up early ECU program messed my engine up, it failed at 43K, it still works, just stall at red lights and stuff. but my Reman has 14K miles already no issues.

Adam - your post looked reasonable enough to me. I think the real dimbulbs have burned up a good deal of patience.

Answering your question about whether this has happened to anyone else: yes. There are a few posts from people who had replacement engines fail immediately. Might have been installation error. Anything can happen at a dealer...there was one incident of an 8 burning up because the dealer didn't attach the fuel line correctly. But the first rebuilder Mazda used had poor quality control. Maybe you got a leftover from that batch.

Have not had a bit of trouble with mine, but I've only got 36000 miles.

Ken

This is almost exactly what happened to me, except my 2nd engine never made it off the lot. But unlike you, I got a straight answer that the engine they just installed failed the compression test. It sucks that you haven't been able to drive it lately but they will figure it out and you should be alright. Good luck!
