I've had that happen to me too... if they are close enough to fence on the highway I travel almost daily, they run away... some cattle have run from me too. Hmm.. I will have to pay more attention to them now..

I think I've seen deer smacked by just about any sort of vehicle - trains, cars, trucks, buses, even aircraft! Snowmobiles and motorcycles vs. deer are much less pretty, however. I've heard of deer vs. helicopter...

 

Do skunks really smell that bad? Has anyone run over a skunk? Just wondering what their scent is like and could someone describe to me what the closest man-made scent to replicate a skunk. Just curious!

Tears go away in a day or two. And the effect on the eyes really is like tear gas but the smell is more like really cheap perfume.

Smell goes away in about a week and then you could move back in.

Tomato juice works well on both dogs and Boy Scouts. Nothing like waking up in an adirondack full of Boy Scouts, watching a skunk eating away on some food a kid has hidden in his pack, and one of the boys wakes up and freaks out!

 

The scent is mostly an oily Mercaptin... Eyes are briefly blinded, nose runs and burns, delicate tissues are highly irritated and people will move away from you at a high rate of speed. – Drooling and a runny nose are common in both man and dog – dogs will scream and flee and never bother another skunk. If the oil actually hits you, vomiting can be induced. At a distance, it is something like rubber, chemicals, and it fills the senses. It has the ability to spead a fairly long distance. Skunks know their power and will raise their tails - so even do hand stands to warn you away while they take aim. A dead skunk is almost as powerful as a live one, you don't want your car sprayed or your wheels contaminated. Sending one through the mail would be funny but very difficult – it would not go unnoticed. The nearest but less toxic compound is BAL (British Anti-Lewisite). Only open it under a fume hood! Tomato juice and shaving the hair off can help, clothes will be a loss! Skunks are fearless and will not flee from cars!


Male deer go through a silly season and may run at anything that goes through their marked territory. I was on base at Maryland where we had many deer. I was driving slowly about 5 mph and one ran into the side of my car. It did not do much damage and sort of bounced off. I saw that its tongue was out and it smeared the passanger window - It looked very surprised! Left me both shaken and laughing...

Elk are much bigger - horse sized - huge antlers and very dangerous - I and a friend got treed for several hours when we made the mistake of trying to mimic their mating call. Their eyes get blood shot and they urinate and then paw the wet nasty mud onto their own chests.

Friend from India says their jeep was chased by an elephant - they also have a silly season and there are glands located in front of the ears that weep and look wet - this is a warning!

 

Three words:

Burnt sesame oil.

Hmmm... I've just gathered a thought of smearing the burnt sesame seed oil on the lawn to repel dogs pooing. Hope the doggy runs and drag their silly owners with them.

 

Heh-heh. I'll admit it's not the closest match, but all I can say is that for the longest time my wife literally did not know what skunk smelled like. Then we were driving along a highway once, I smelled it (after seeing something black and white and flat on the road), then she said "what is that smell? it's like burnt sesame oil." I haven't been able to shake the similarity since.

 

It strikes me funny that deer run away from my 8 exhaust which is stock.

But my motorcycle, which has aftermarket cobra pipes on it, doesn't even cause my neighbors horses to flinch.

 

Lesson learned there...don't mess with the elk...I can only imagine how fast it went from funny to "oh crap"

 

Got that right! Had to sit in branches until friend with a jeep chased it away! Would not repeat that experiment!

I have a herd of about 6 deer, they had fear of our cars at first but are used to them.

They seem to like the Blue 8 - sorry I have been unable to send pictures but have photos of the 8 with the deer trying to look at their reflections, also rabbits (which hide under the 8) and the peacocks!

Peacocks are a pest. Like to stand and block the drive way, poop on cars if left uncovered, and leave big foot prints. The biggest male thinks he owns the 8 and does a fan dance in front of it when it the mating season - we have pictorial proof that 8s attract chicks at least peacock chicks!

At night we turn off the bright lights and put on the CD player to avoid scaring the neighbors horses - I think the car is too quiet and appears to suddenly which is why you get the shock reaction - they can hear other cars a long way off -

We have a semi-tame skunk "Mr. Stinky" who lives in the orchard. We are aware of him, and try to avoid embarassing confrontations...
