I don't wanna mess anything up, that would be bad!
Start the car and when the revs fall back down naturally to a reasonable idle (if it's really cold the revs can sometimes shoot up to and hold at 2500 rpm for 10-30 seconds after first starting the car) then feel free to take off and drive while holding the revs under at least 4k rpm until the temp gauge gets closer to the half way mark. The car will warm up much quicker when the engine is under load and sitting and idling is not always best. The car actually has a fuel cut if you try to rev it beyond 5k rpm's when cold as a fail safe. If you must shut the car off before it's fully warmed up - at least rev it to 3k rpm's or so, let the idle fall back down, then shut it off. I've never flooded mine even though I have shut if off not fully warmed up on several occasions. No need to be worried - it's not as finicky as it sounds - once you get used to these procedures (which should generally be followed when driving any car) - you won't think twice about it.

Welcome to the club!

You are going to love driving your new dream car. She'll treat you really well.

Your 04 may not have the security door fix. (Ask Mazda about it) (Or PM me)
Ask your Rotary friends about Royal Purple &/or Idemitsu oil.
The Mazda Ipod adapter sucks, avoid it & buy an OEM version it's the same Price, only it can display the song info on your display
Racing Beat sway bars are a killer upgrade for the RX8
New Exhaust (For sound purposes only, don't kid yourself) (I like Racing Beat)
Fat wide tires on 9-10 inch wide (light weight) rims is an expensive upgrade but well well worth it!
Clay Bar & Nufinish are staples for cleaning. (But use better products as you raise your $$ benchmark)

You're going to keep falling in love with this car!

Pull out of your parking (120 seconds)
Drive gently under 3,000 rpm (until the temp needle starts to move)
Keep it under 5,000 rpm until the temp gauge is in the middle.
Drive it like you stole it (and don't spill your coffee)!
And it will take a long time beefore you can wipe the smile off your face!

Congrats and Welcome..! :p

I just switched from a V6 99 Honda Accord to this Beautiful RX8. On tuesday I went to the dealership and bought a 2004 Black Rx8. I know its an older model, but its all I could afford for my dream car. I've been researching this for months and finally have been able to find one in my price range thats in good condition.

To be honest this site made my decision final. Reading how amazing these cars were to drive just made me want one more and more everyday so I finally bit the bullet and bought one. I want to thank you all for helping me make this decision But more on the note I wanted to get onto I had some questions.

1) How often should I check the oil and what kind of oil should I use (Brand, and weight?)
2) Flooding the Engine? I heard its pretty easy to do, how can I avoid it?
3) Starting the car 15 minutes before I go and drive to let the igniter warm up?
4) Shutting the car off and starting it again a couple minutes after?

That was pretty much it, and anymore information you could offer to a first time owner would be GREAT. Also its completely stock that I know about so it should be covered by this extended warranty I hope anyways I thank you all in advance for the posts!!
I'm sure you've gotten plenty of answers, but I figure I'll give my input as well.

1. I generally check it every fill-up.
2. I have the old style starter, and I've never had to turn the car over for more than two seconds. I don't do anything special besides letting the car warm up reasonably (movement in the temp needle) before shutting it off. I have forgotten two or three times to let it warm up, and it restarted without issue.
3. No need. I don't take it above 5000 RPM until the temp needle is at temp.
4. Related to #2. If you're waiting "a few minutes" I don't see why you would have a problem.

Welcome to the club, and enjoy the car.

Aye. The Mazda dealer I bought mine from even had a fresh change and fill of 5w30 when I bought it.

I love my old car, I put so much work into it I was almost in tears when I signed the title over.. But alas its for a better car!

The tranny in my accord went out 3 times in 4 years, almost a tranny a year.. sucked so much having to shell out so much money for something -_-;

Anyways, alot of people liked it, and alot of people didn't.. But I did!

You should be out of coffee before the temp gauge hits center if yer thirsty

But i think this really sums it up. Drive it and use it like any other car. Its designed to be a car after all.

As for oil fillups, after a while you will learn the rate of oil slurping of your car and you will only have to check every 10 times you fill up or so. Besides, before you hit a critical oil level a little red light with an oil can will light up on the dash telling you that you have been tardy with the oil fillups.

Oh and while we are speaking of oils, a good oil for the gearbox is the same oil as the S2000 uses. The RX-8 and S2000 pretty much share gearboxes and some RX-8s have a grinding problem where as the S2000 doesn't. Its the oil that makes the difference. I have a few friends in the Swedish wankel-club who runs on S2000 oil and they say its really great. I'm switching gearbox oil to S2000 gearbox oil this spring to see what all the fuzz is about.

When the needle is in the middle dooen't mean that you can drive it like you stole it. The needle shows the water temp. The oil takes longer to warm up to operating temperatures. It may take 1 up to 10 km, or even more, after the water temp reaches the middle point (aproximatly 82 degrees celsius) depending on ambient temperature. If you have an oil temp gauge you can see that easily.

Thanks Kersh4w, that was only a quick wash, took me about 20 minutes, just a wash / wheels / dry.

I use this stuff from AutoMagic that works wonders, and then I use meguires car-wax, I think its called Next wax or something. The bottle is in my trunk. I'm detailing the car again when it gets a little warmer and I think I'll sneak another few pictures in with it.

Shes going to look even prettier this time around

4. No problem once it's warm.

On the "rev to 3000 before shutting off" - read the quick start guide for exactly what that's about.

Welcome to the rotary world and rx8club. You have escaped from the dark realm of pistons and cams.

Ken
What is the reason behind not letting it idle too long before driving?

I usually start it up and wait for a high pitch sound to subside and the idle settles before I start in the cool morning (cool for Hawaii = 65 degrees)

Nice RX-8! I also like your Accord. A good analogy is that the Accord made to look sporty is like a business man putting on a headband to go play hoops. The RX-8 will give you that experience in it's stock form.

Congrats and welcome! Nice looking '04. That's in great condition!

If you've done your research, you should have known that oil question would spark some conversation. I'm actually really surprised by the lack of heated debate! I would invest some time and search the forums here. There's all sorts of posts about oil type and weight. After researching, I settled on Royal Purple (Aaaah! Synthetic!) in 5W20 with no problems. There's no clear answer, and therefore no really right or wrong answer. There's plenty of posts to support either arguement, so figure out what you're comfortable with and take it from there.

All of the other posts to your questions were right on, so I won't be redundant. Congrats again and great looking 8! I absolutely LOVE this car!
