Here is how most of my conversations go on this subject;

"it has no pistons, just this triangle shaped part that rotates..." - bemused look

"only has three moving parts..." - confused look

"look, if I take this paperclip, shape it like a triangle and spin it around this pencil..." - no longer confused, but back to bemused

"it revs higher, is very compact and light, quick throttle response, very VERY smooth, reliable" - this always leads to them wondering why their aren't more rotaries

"well, only mazda is investing in them, probably since they tend to be thirsty fuel wise and require more oil top ups." - which turns most non enthusiasts off

So the moral of this story? ...there isn't one

Yes there is...

You have to be an automotive/sports car enthusiasts to "get" what makes the RX8 special. Most people are just peddle smashers and think of cars as nothing but a tool. Us on the other hand...see the "art" in our beloved cars, or better said our beloved RX8 and it's rotary.

Long ago, when I had my RX-3, I used to have one of those "visible" models of the rotory engine. You could always look around for one of those, though I doubt there is one of the newest Renesis yet. Googling shows them available.

I've got one of those. I have yet to put it together. Or find space for when it is built for that matter. We filled up the storage locker, no garage in navy housing... so we've been throwing stuff out like mad to make room for the baby. Maybe I can take it to work.

I know what we need to do - at exactly 5:30 today we all get in our 8's and redline them. See if the earth shifts on its axis.

^^^ Now there's an idea - sort of like the "superbowl flush" at half time that supposedly causes municipal water supplies to drop momentarily.

My 10 year old sons are facinated by the car - after one of my frequent redline dashes the other day, twin #2 says: "Dad, why do you do that all the time?"

My answer?

.... "Because I can!"

damn i cant even go for a drive today- frikking snowed a half an inch here. im fine driving in a little snow even on the stock tires (actually the roads are just wet) as i grew up outside of Philly driving RWD cars in a foot of snow. But around here a half inch is enough to make a lot of people really nervous- but not enough to make the invincible SUV drivers slow down a little. Makes for very hairy driving.

5:30 is a poor time to pick around here, just too much traffic to reliably have room to open it up like that.

By the way, I *loved* Stew's story.

oh yeah, i was literally smiling the whole drive into work this morning (even WITH bad traffic!) listen to my rotary engine whirrling away, feels and sounds even better now w/ new Redline gear oil added than when it was stock!
