A fuel source combines with an oxidizing agent... add in an ignition source. Poof. fire. It scared the sh*t out of the cavemen too.

Go to be proud of my fellow English men for driving past and not stopping to help. Is it me or is it still running there is smoke coming out of the exhaust.

I'd say that it is either A) the engine was recently replaced and the fuel line connector popped free or B) something aftermarket wired in the engine bay started it.

Possible that it's another issue, like someone spilling oil all over the engine that suddenly ignited, but the above two are the two primary hits for RX-8 engine fires. If it was middle of the car then it would either be aftermarket audio related or cat related.

I'd say that the smoke from the rear is just drifting there, as there is the transmission tunnel to the rear from the front, and smoke that gets pushed into there only has the rear as an exit point.

Hopefully the owner didn't just have liability insurance on that car

In the uk it's called 3rd party fire and theft, which only covers the other car in an accident. But... it also covers fire and theft, so they will be fine.

I personally hope for lots of fire in the right locations, like inside the combustion chamber :-D
