I bought a s10 xtreme when I turned 16. Insurance on it was like $3200. Probably the ideal vehicle for me. I got 5 years out of it. Fun to drive, handled great and slow enough not to get in trouble. I still have it so I don't have to take the 8 out in the snow. Only cost $6000 when I bought it with 30000 miles, still worth about $4000. I'm 21 now and just bought a used 8. Insurance is $1600, in massachusetts, which is usually double other states. When I hit six years of of driving next year its will drop to $900 with full coverage.
The 8 has to much snap for an inexperienced driver and will most likely end up wrecked. I did a ton of stupid stuff in my s10, luckily the 100 hp engine was able to get to go fast enough to be uncontrollable. Even though the 8 is slow compared to other stuff on the market, its fast enough to have stuff happen very fast.

hey guys, i just turned 16 last weekend and ive been thinking about buying an rx8. im sure tons of people ask "is this the right car for me?" and it probably gets really old, but theres a couple of things i need to know about
insurance- im 16, any cars insurance is gonna be bad. is it gonna be a lot worse in an rx8?
oil- a dealer told me that you had to check the oil every other time you fill up the gas tank. does anyone actually do that and is it necessary?
reliability- how often do the cars need repairs that are costly.
i have drove an rx8 and i love it. i just wanted to know a little more about it from real owners

To the OP, show your parents this thread.
Buy this car, and someone is going to get hurt. As responsible as you think you are, peer pressure WILL get to you, and you will do something stupid. You will get the urge to impress your friends or the girls, and it will wind up in a guardrail or wrapped around a tree.
My first car was an POS $800 1969 Firebird. It was fast, but was falling apart. Fortunately it broke down before I was able to kill myself in it, but in the six months that I drove it, I was off the road twice in inclement weather because I had no idea how to handle a RWD car with a lot of power. That included sliding sideways down a two lane road for about 300 feet in incoming traffic. I was a responsible teenager, and should have been hurt, but just got LUCKY. Get a FWD car...maybe an RSX or Civic. Oh, and make at least half the loan/insurance payments yourself.

what is it with 16 year old buying $30,000 cars? do parents just not give a **** anymore?
I didnt even have *A* car till I was a sophomore in collge (im 25 now). I don't care how rich, smart, good of a driver you are. Every first car a kid has should be a "reliable piece of ****".
For my current situation its just like I would LOVE to go and get a crotch rocket motorcycle, I could afford it but I'm not stupid enough to just go get a 200mph big bike and start flying. I know I'd lay the bike down at some point so why start big and powerful when something will happen to a newbie.
You said you just turned 16 last week... so that means you were 15 two weeks ago, what person your age just has $25,000+ laying around thats 100% yours? and by yours I mean you earned/worked for every cent?
Save your money, buy something lower down to start, and work your way up.

wow thanks for all the input guys. just to answer a few comments i saw...
i wont be racing the car, ive saved my money for way too long to go and wreck it
i have about 14k saved up, but i know a used car salesman that is gonna get me one and take no profit on it. im looking at about a 60k mile 2004 model
i actually called the insurance guy, and its only $20 more a month in an rx8 then it would be to drive a honda civic.
i agree that im not as responsible as older drivers, but ive taken 20 hours of behind the wheel drivers ed, ive drove in downtown atlanta traffic many times, and ive probably drove about 100 hours this year with my learners permit.
and my parents are going to have an old car i will drive sometimes, so if i do get a need for speed i can total the other car.

Well it seems these days that a lot of kids are just getting handed **** on gold platters, and personally i hate it, i have worked for everything i bought, including my 8, and i hate seeing people just get handed **** from their parents. thats bullshit. It makes kids selfish, ungrateful, and ********. I blame parents like this for the way the country is going, these kids dont know the meaning of a dollar and dont know what hard labor is, and probably never will
and wow, i love how people assume that im just getting the car as a gift. ive been saving money for a car since the 5th grade, ive put money in the stock market and made a lot of money, ive worked ever since i could find a job, and counting school im basically working 70 hour weeks. its selfish ungrateful ******* people like you that are to blame for how the nation is going.

I basically just skipped all the psots and want to directly answer the questions if I remember them all.
I got my 8 when I was 16. If your mature enough then get it. If your looking to street race forget it. I always got pulled over for no reason. One officer even told me that the car was too much for me. No ticket or warning just thought I was suspicous, he let me go about my day.
The insurance part. Well, It's considered a 4 Cylinder so it won't be as much as a
V6 car but at 16 will cost some money.
Oil. Every 3k miles. i don't check it every fill up. I usually take a look see once a month.
It's a great car. And remember always look out for the wreckles drivers out there. I've been in 3 accidents and none were my fault. One was in a DMV parking lot. LOL. One was a hit and run. He ran a red light and I side swiped his car. No air bags and the other a woman ran a stop sign in a school zone and hit my front fender.

it doesnt matter how long you are...it just depends on how stupid you can be when you drive it. You can be old and still not able to handle the power of some cars. Just take care of it. I'm 17 and am loving the car. If you like it get it.

now im 17... and loving it! modding = addiction
hahah and with the 8... you get more friends (rx8 members! meets are awesome!) and girls
insurance not that bad.. the part that gets very annoying is.. GAS! i get gas every 3days
consider gas.. seriously.. for the most part in my opinion this car is head turner to the max. and when i got the 8 i knew nothing about the car.. just that the car is stunning
think about it!
